The pizza is just delicious so soft and tasty, it really makes you feel like you're eating a pizza in Italy.. everything was very fresh. The service is okay, it was not like the below reviews have written, but in saying that there is nothing really good or bad to say about it.
Ambience - well there is never really much happening in there, maybe some nicer tunes and a bit of happiness by everyone inside will make it a nicer atmosphere. Have been back and will keep coming back just to get that pizza fix.
I really enjoyed Pizza Mario, except for the pizzas. And it had nothing to do with expecting the inauthentic style to be found elsewhere. I’ve even eaten pizza in Italy, if that means anything. No, my gripe was over the toppings themselves, not the quantity. The bases were lovely, but on our potato and rosemary pizza, the potato was still a touch raw and crisp. The problem with the margherita with rocket and prosciutto pizza was harder to pin-point, but there was something that didn’t quite gel, despite being such a classic combination.
On the upside, the waiter was very helpful with wine advice, the service (as mentioned in other reviews) was speedy and friendly, and the bill came in at under $100 for three, which is becoming a rare event in Sydney, even for pizza.
On the strength of the bases, I will return to try other toppings in the hope that I chose poorly or simply hit a dud night. Recommended.
Consistency is their strength. You always know what you're going to get.
The pizza is good if you like Napoli style... thicker edges and very poor topping that's the real thing, not as other places that declare themselves as truly Napolitan... bla bla bla. Let's the product do the talk!!
Clearly, when you see a queue for tables, you know you've stumbled across an amazing restaurant. This was my first time at Pizza Mario and straight up knew this was my type of pizzeria !!!
When you first walk in, you are greeted by the pizza makers since their kitchen and the wood fire oven is all open plan and immediately in front of the entrance .. quite handy since this is where you stand to wait for your table so it's great to watch them roll out the dough and make their pizzas. Also very social and friendly staff .. chefs would often let us know what was on each pizza as they were pulling them out of the oven - just adds to that personal feel !!
The pizzas were incredible to say the least, cooked to perfection and just the right amount of topping. We settled on the Salamino (mozarella, ricotta and hot spicy salami) and a margherita with ham and olive .. this is where I start on the service -the pizzas arrived within a few minutes (in fact, the cutlery hadn't even arrived). We had wine .. same service, the wine came out within minutes of ordering. Same with the panacotta (for the record, the panacotta had a mandarin reduction sauce over it. This reduction sauce alone was worth the price of the dessert).
Amazing service. This may be due to the fact we had a late dinner (930pm) so the kitchen isn't as busy at that time. Regardless will definitely be back for the great food and brilliant service !!!
We showed up at about 7 pm on Saturday, an hour after they'd opened. The restaurant was already packed, but there was only one or two groups in the queue ahead of us. They took our phone number, we strolled off to a bar for a beer and were called by the time we'd finished our first glass.
It's a cosy little place nestled to one side of an otherwise rather bleak plaza. The wall-stacked logs and green checkered paper tablecloths are a nice touch, and the big blackboard of specials hanging on one wall meanwhile gives the pizzeria image a final polish. It's reasonably noisy and space is a little tight, but nothing too obnoxious. Lively is a word I'd use.
An entree of fried calamari rings were fresh, sweet and tender. For mains we had the classic calzone, filled with ricotta, mozzarella and salami, as well as the gorgonzola, mozzarella and radicchio pizza. Nicely scorched, puffy-yet-chewy crusts and the winning topping combinations made these pizzas a standout for me. This has got to be some of Sydney's best pizza.
It's not especially cheap but prices are fair, mozzarella di bufala is an expensive product and I'm happy to pay for the real thing. We didn't experience rude or curt service at all, unlike some other reviewers. On the contrary, staff were efficient, bubbly and charming. You can sense a drive to turn tables quickly (when you're this popular isn't that simply good business?), but I didn't feel this came at a cost to customer service.
Pizza Mario definitely makes my shortlist for Sydney's best pizzeria.
Altogether, Pizza Mario was a great place for dinner if one is already in the vicinity of Surry Hills. I probably wouldn't travel a long way here, though, as I felt that the food was not that memorable. The pizzas were lovely but not outstanding. I felt that they lacked some substance/topping/meat.
Staff were wonderful and accommodated our large group politely, especially when different people arrived at different times. I've had better pizza at, say, Mario's Pizzeria of Croydon, where the pizzas are delumptious and the value is more reasonable (that's what non-CBD prices are like for you!)
Some of the best, if not the best, pizza's in Sydney. The margherita extra is fantastic with an almost perfect base, incredibly fresh tomato and basil and buffalo mozzarella. Service was as expected. Restaurant can seem a little bit dark. Probably the only "fault" is the popularity of this place! You really need to turn up near opening to avoid a long wait.
I waited to put my name on the waitlist for 15 minutes with not even a peep from the staff. This made me angry and extremely frustrated - I ended up leaving and going elsewhere. Arrogant staff.
