I have no idea how this place got accreditation from the Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana, cause this didn't hit the mark. The pizza bases were not quite cooked through, which was sorely disappointing. And I was dumbfounded that the mushrooms on the mushroom pizza were Shiitake. Asian mushrooms on a napoli pizza?! It was weird and not good.
What happened to this place? I used to enjoy eating at Pizza Mario. I went back last night to satisfy a pizza craving and was bitterly disappointed. The service has been on a downward spiral for a while and it seems to have hit rock bottom. Rude and arrogant to say the least.
$45 for one pizza, bottle of water and a side salad, there doesn't seem to be much value in that. The food was horrific, there were a 'generous' 2 slices of tomato and 3 pieces of bocconcini. The pizza was very soggy and needed to be eaten with a spoon.
I'm not sure what is going on with the hygiene either, both of us who ate there fell ill since our meal last night. We will never eat at or recommend Pizza Mario again.
Pizzas are generally really goo, the Calabrese, Margerita and Capriosca deserve mention but the Spicy sausage with Cime de Rape (which turned out to be Broccoli) was pretty boring and tasteless. The dough itself was fantastic but, perhaps, a little soggy in the middle? but so light and fluffy but thin all the same.
The service was pretty good, no complaints but I can see how people would find them a bit stuck up. I did find the prices for the pizzas a bit expensive for the size of them. I would like to go back and try the proscuitto pizzas and to have the Calabrese again.
Pizza's are amongst best I've had in Sydney. The bases are perfect, everything else is great, sauces, toppings, cheese. Great atmosphere, nicely located (hidden away) in Surry Hills. Pizza's are a little small and a little on the pricey side, but well worth it.
Solid, reliable food & service. They always deliver a fantastic pizzas (minus the one with broccoli!), friendly welcome and fast service. Now, just if they were open for weekend lunch!
We though the experience was very good overall. Very courteous waiters, and the food was great. We did hear a table next to us complaining about how rude the waiters were, but they need to get over themselves. They were doing the best they could, and having the customers be so rude wouldn't exactly help the situation. I have had better pizza's, but it would be up there in the top 3 in Sydney. Very nice.
Quite a few friends had been recommending this place and with us doing grocery shopping in the nearby Woolies, we decided it was finally time to check it out. On arrival, we were greeted in a very rude manner (more like not greeted at all) and it took us a minute or two, neglect by the wait staff meant we could just choose any table available.
In general, one of the waiters was an absolutely unfriendly, almost rude person, the other one at least could afford to smile but found talking to some personal friends on nearby table more worthwhile than caring about all the other guests. The food is nice but way overrated, especially as they prices are way too high. There are better Italians with less of a pricetag around, particularly in Surry Hills.
Also, the restaurants boasts being an authentic Italian place and even shows off some Italian memberships on the menu while all their kitchen staff obviously stems from the Asian continent.
I have never been greeted so rudely in a restaurant before. If I wasn't with friends who wanted to eat there, I would have turned around and walked out! Just rude! Sorry I put you out by coming to your restaurant. Great pizza, but you will pay for it. I'm never going back.
We went back on Sunday night, feeling a bit nervous after some of the recent reviews, but we were not disappointed! We loved the delicious pizza and school prawns and the service was fast, efficient and friendly as always. Can't top that insalata mista, what olive oil do they use its the best? We finished off with an affogato which went down a treat. Still our favourite pizza spot overall.
What happened to this place? My recent experiences there yielded nothing but disappointment. 2 of my recent 3 forays there had been bad. The pizza (in particular the potato topping), was undercooked and for that price, certainly inexcusable. This used to be my favourite pizza haunt, but I am now embarassed to have recommended this venue to friends. Can we please have some quality control, as I know that they can do much better than current form.
