Well the view from the back room is lovely but so squishy and the ottomans just so bad, if you are taller than average stay right away from them! The floor is sticky downstairs and up the stairs. The waitress tipped a whole jug full of iced water. Would have left but had already ordered. Food was nice but not fabulous. We got a main meal off (due to water spillage) and I had entertainment card so ended up with another 25$ off, so that was good?
This is not the kind of place to go for any sort of, uh, significant dining experience, so to speak. The setting and 'ambience' is mediocre at best, somewhat worrying at worst. But the food is pretty good. Well they make a great beef salad, which is a tasty quick, good value lunch. Recently they've also got something of a so-called buffet going, which I would avoid but friends suggest is acceptable. Essentially, I return for the beef salad. Well if I'm nearby.
David Dale in the SMH used to say there's no such thing as a bad Thai restaurant in Sydney. How wrong he is: Pinto Thai is it.
The food was well below average. We ordered a number of dishes that we expected to be hot but everything was mild, bordering on bland. None of the dishes, even the tom yum soup, had any kick or spice to them whatsoever.
We sat upstairs on pouffes (ottomans) which were uncomfortable and impractical. They look trendy but are hopeless for restaurant seating. Avoid them. As for the toilets, don't go there. They are disgusting. And who thought it was a good idea to make customers walk past smelly rubbish bins to reach them?
Finally, the lighting was excessively dim, making it a real chore trying to read the tiny print on the menus. When I asked the waitress if the lights could be turned up, she said they had to be kept down to "make the place nice". Here's a tip to Pinto Thai: it takes a lot more than dim lighting to make a restaurant "nice".
If you love your Thai food, unfortunately, I can't recommend this one. The Larb Chick was very fatty and it lacks in taste. We also had Red Curry, which is okey but not great. The Thai fish cake is process and not fresh at all. We won't be back that's for sure. A lot of better Thai rest on Darling St.
I dined here with 2 friends on Friday night. I didn't think the ambience was anything special but the food was great (but small portions). We ordered the Thai beef salad which was gorgeous, green chicken curry which had just the right amount of spice and a vegetable noodle dish.
The major disappointment was the cockroach which scurried across the table beside us, it put me on edge for the rest of the night. Other than that and with the Entertainment Book coupon, this place is great value and provided a fun night out!
Amazing, I have been here too many times to remember and I live on the other side of the city. I recommend the beef pad thai, chicken and cashews, the pumpkin stir fry and the satay stir fry. Also try the prawn chips and satay dip, wierd but really great. Service is slightly overlooked, however, meals are always on time and beautifully presented.
We went here for a mid week meal and walked away very happy. On Monday to Wednesday they threw in a free starter and also a free dessert. The food we ordered was really enjoyable although as it was a Tuesday, our bellies weren't as adventurous as they could have been.
OH MY GOD!!! To Melcha...this actually happened to my sister a couple of weeks ago! There were about 7 people at the restaurant and again the whole family of cockroaches came out and started walking up the walls and one actually landed on a lady sitting on the table next to them. They didn't eat anything and wouldn't even offer a discount. The only excuse they came up with is that the building was old! YUK!!! Don't even bother going here!!!
I went to Pinto Thai last night. As advised by some reviewers, I asked to be seated upstairs. The view upstairs of the city and Harbour Bridge was fantastic. All was going well UNTIL...cockroaches! Yes you heard right, cockroaches. A whole family of them, we counted at least six! Crawling up the wall right next to us, onto our table and the table next to us! Absolutely DISGUSTING! We should have had a free meal but got a discounted bill instead. But I do have to say that the whole barramundi and Pinto pancake was very nice. It's a pity about the roaches, will not go back unless their infestation is fixed.
We were feeling lazy tonight so we decided to get home delivery food from Pinto Thai. We chose three dishes from their rather exciting menu which was full of funny and mysterious phrasing like 'reach for the star curry sauce', 'fantastic sauce' and 'jungle on wok in spicy sauce'. The first dish we tried was called a Pinto Pancake (Thai Style) ($18.50). The pancake was crisp and tasty, with hoards of pan-fried mussels, a mound of fresh, green garlic shoots, bean sprouts, a 'special dip' which tasted like a variety of sweet chilli with perhaps tamarind or maybe some fish sauce, definitely made from scratch. It was an absolute winner of a dish - if this is how it travels, I wait eagerly to taste it in the restaurant.
Though we were loath to move on, we tried the second dish - Devil Stir Fried Big Prawn (under 8 size) in shell ($21.50). Now we hazard that under 8 size means that the prawns are about 8 to a kilo (or 125 grams each)... but we could be wrong. The sauce involve a terrific use of black peppercorns, with tiny mushrooms (bursting with flavour), onion and capsicum. The 4 big prawns were tasty, and cooked in such a way that their shells melted (in the mouth if you so chose). Their flesh was well-cooked, and barbequing in the shell really brought out the flavour. It was a definite success!
The final dish we tried, and again we were loath to abandon the earlier 'big prawns', was Aromatic Soft Shell Crab with Lychee Salad ($22.50). The salad involved large whole lychees, mint, mixed leaves, sliced chilli, spring onion, hunks of spanish onion, lemongrass capsicum and a light aromatic dressing. The scattered pieces of deep fried soft shell crab were reminiscent of salt-and-pepper style, and all together this was a superb dish. We were astounded with the quality and value for money on this take-away, and it has inspired us to dine in next time! I chose 5 on each ambience and service, and will adjust after dining in.
