Overview of The Pie Tin

Artisan pie bakery, using old fashioned hand-making techniques and quality ingredients to bring the humble pie to a new level. Our range includes classic savoury pies like Chunky Steak with Cheddar Cheese & Bacon as well as a variety of vegetarian options including Vege Korma Curry, and some house specialities such as Mexican Chicken with Kidney Beans & Sour Cream, and Slow Roasted Shredded Pork with Apple & BBQ sauce.

Pies are served ‘solo’ or with house-made hot side dishes such as Home-style Potato or Sweet Potato Mash with Gravy or cold salads including Coleslaw, Potato salad and Rocket, Pumpkin & Feta Salad.

But is not all about savoury pies, we also offer a wide array of sweet pies such as American Style Pumpkin Pie, Classic Apple Pie, Lemon Meringue Pie, Date & Walnut Freeform Pie, Gooey Caramel & Chocolate Ganache and Banoffee Pie.

The Pie Tin is also licensed, so if an old fashioned milk shake in a steel cup, or specialty coffee just doesn’t cut it, then select from our range of beer, cider or bubbles to accompany your pie.

All of our pies are handmade and baked fresh on the premises in Newtown.

Been here on two separate occasions, once for dinner, and once for coffee and cake. There's no table service, and the counter staff are pretty ho-hum.

The savoury food is okay, and I think the value not too bad as you get a decent serving for $10, however, in Newtown there are plenty of sub-$10 eateries. The pies taste quite nice, but the mushy peas were just pasty and dry.

The coffee they make there is actually very nice, and the dessert pies are served in Large slices, however, they are very sweet. I would say they are cooked to American tastes: lots of sugar, lots of thick creamy gooey syrupy elements. There's a time and place for these sorts of desserts, but they are more in the ballpark of other standard cafe cakes like Mortal Sin, etc. and not so appealing to my more European tastebuds.

I would go back again, probably for a quick lunch or coffee with a mate, something very casual.

The hidden gem of Kings st. Honestly could not find fault of any kind with this place. Friendly staff, authentic old world charm mixed with modern finish to interior, great value and mouthwatering pie and sides. I recommend the pie 2 sides for $10, or for those with a sweet tooth any of the sweet pies and coffee is a must.

I've been suggested to The Pie Tin a few times by my close friends and, unfortunately, I wish I could say it was a great experience but it wasn't.

The pies were delicious, however, the staff very rude. I was so excited as I had my mum visiting Sydney from Europe and wanted to take her to this place all my friends raved about. When looking at pies I was explaining my mum what each pie is and translating all the side dishes it comes with so she can pick and choose what she feels like. The staff both start giggling, laughing, making smart (not) comments leaving us both uncomfortable.

The bottom line is the customer service was very poor. There is one thing for sure, you can fix many things but you can't fix an attitude. Loved the food but won't come back as it was a very disappointing experience.

Really good savoury pies and great value $10 with two sides. Nice mash but I didn't really enjoy the mushy peas. The sweet pies are very rich but very tasty, probably could just share one between two.

I love the idea of pie tin - so why a 5 for food? I ride there all the time, different pie each time. Yet, yet, despite great pastry and lovely sides (coleslaw a great treat) the pie fillings (savoury) always fall down for me. The classic meat pie was over flavoured with what felt like a store sauce, the lamb and rosemary - lamb was tough and pie under seasoned, the steak/Guinness with potato - again tough and not as flavoursome as it could be. The Veggie broccoli and cauliflower with cheese didn't have a cheese/white sauce, more just a layer of cheddar on top of veggies...

Today I had a new beef brisket and mushroom, and the meat was in big chunks, of which 50% was fat, and not meat, and the mushroom around was watery. I want so hard to love the pies, but always I am disappointed. I feel the store needs to embrace more spices and fresh herbs, and choose slightly better cuts of meat.

The sweet pies are always a winner and coffee and sides always delicious. For a place called Pie Tin - they need to work on the hero of their store, the humble pie. Also - since becoming licensed, the three times I have been in its no longer self serve table water - I suppose to encourage you to buy a cool beer if you are thirsty. You can still ask for table water... but the change is noticeable to me.

We have walked along King St many time but never noticed this small cafe that served home made pies and decadent pies. I only found out via a food blogger and after seeing the photos my husband and I came to try their sweet offerings. To share we had the choc banoffie tart and the coconut cream tart. Both were nice and for $6.50, the portions are very generous. We will definitely come back to try their savory pies and more of their delicious tarts!

Came here on a lazy Sunday afternoon for lunch while in the mood for a good old pie and left very impressed with this place in a side street just off the main road. Interiors were funky with a centre square communal table with stools, and smaller tables dotted around the edges. They make all their pies onsite and you can tell - the pies were generously portioned, with the yummiest pastry and recognisable ingredients inside (unlike the freezer variety).

Sweet pies were also available in addition to a wide variety of savoury. There were options to order a pie with a couple of sides; choices we had were potato salad, pumpkin salad and baked potato. The strawberry milkshake which came in an old fashioned steel tin glass had an amazing strawberry flavour, and they do coffees too, of course. Definitely a crown jewel in terms of gourmet pies, and lovely service too!
