We were both hungry after having a couple of beers at the new gay owned pub, The Clarence Hotel just round the corner. We weren't after anything fancy, just a cheap and cheerful meal. After sitting down, they presented us with menus and informed us that it was opening night - reopening night actually, after having been closed for 3 months. You have to ask the question as to why did they closed in the first place?
I chose fettucine pesto and my partner had spag bol. I was immediately told that they didn't have pesto!! What kind of an Italian restaurant doesn't have pesto, especially on opening night??!! My 2nd choice was spinach & ricotta cannelloni.
We each ordered a glass of red wine, only for one of the glasses to have a huge crack in it. Also during this time, the music stopped. It wasn't exactly romantic kinda music anyway and when the staff did eventually take notice (after about 5 mintues), they replaced it with something like the piped music you'd expect to hear in a shopping mall.
Our meals came out in record time, just over 10 minutes but was very disappointing. My cannelloni although filling, was tasteless and had just been microwaved for a few minutes before being served with a very ordinary tomato sauce. My partner's spag bol was even worse. The pasta was tough, not al dente and the sauce was made with dried herbs which wasn't very tasty at all. The meal including wine came to a total price of $41. A cheap eat? not really and I would expect a little more for this price.
