This is about the fourth time we have visited this restaurant over as many years if not more. This occasion was a Friday lunch with a group of 8 people. Service was fine and courteous, unlike one of or earlier visits.
Whilst the presentation of the food was very good, the quality of some of the meals was not up to the same standard. Those of us who had the Moroccan chicken found it a bit dried out whilst the accompanying salad was prepared from unripe avocados and tomatoes.
A mystery to me, but this restaurant still does not provide tap water with your meal (something that goes back as far as I can remember) - only bottled water which at $9 for 1.5l is on the steep side. As they already have a $3 per glass corkage fee, I feel tap water should be provided free of charge as is the case with every other restaurant in this price bracket.
As always, the location is great and this is what seems to carry this restaurant through – it was about half full during the peak of the lunch hour.
Went to this beautifully situated seafood restaurant the other day with a friend of mine for a sun lunch and I have to say I have mixed feelings. The veiw is amazing so really - for that alone you should give it a go. BYO also a plus. Met by a friendly waitress and a more gruff older woman who seemed annoyed that we had walked in, in the middle of her phone call.
Food was alright- skimpy entrees, but nice mains. But really it's the presentation of this place that lets it down. Cutlery does not match, or the glasses, or plates. Peeling paint, dated (ok awful) chairs, and the bar area looks very scruffy and kocked together- not the best first impression to give. If they just spent a little to 'tart it up' it could be a real Balmain hot-spot, but this place is stuck in a rut. Pray it climbs out or lazy sun lunch in the winter sun on the water could be no more.
Went with a group for lunch here in December, 2006. Enjoyed everything about it. Fantastic! Unfortunately I went there for dinner on Friday night (29/8) with a group of about 20 people from work. Something’s changed – chef different? different management? No atmosphere – only another table of 2 apart from us!
Luckily we had good company cause the food was very ordinary. Someone had main meal of prawns – 4 prawns which were so cooked they were hard to peel and then equally as hard to eat & the privilege of paying $29 for them. People who had risotto said it wasn’t cooked. I had salt/pepper squid as an entrée – 3 pieces of squid each no more than 3cm & tough as rubber to eat & $15.50 to boot. Couple of people had pavlova stacks & had to send them back because the cream ‘was on the turn’, someone else had the sole & said it was like it had been almost mashed & plonked on the plate. On the ‘up’ side, people who had steaks said they were good & some people enjoyed their barramundi as well.
This is a wonderful setting for a restaurant, wouldn’t mind paying if the food was remotely palatable but felt quite ripped off. Don’t know what’s going on there, but I suggest it’s corrected sooner rather than later for the restaurant's sake!
What a wasted location! Boyfriend and I went there for breakfast because we knew the bad review make us scared to go for lunch or dinner. The breakfast was ok with the fantastic view!
The thing that surprised me was at the entrance, only one waitress greeted us (there was a woman who did not greet us but she looked annoyed because we blocked her to kitchen) and gave us the menu, and just said to us anywhere we can sit because there are about 40 tables, but only 3 tables were occupied in sunny sunday morning. Anyway view and location are great so we might have some party there.
This is my 2nd time I have gone to this restaurant, and again it didn't disappoint. We came here for Sunday lunch, and there wasn't much to fault about it. For the restaurant being at full capacity the service was fantastic, we couldn't fault them at all. Genuinely nice staff who are very helpful. For entree I had the salt and pepper squid. Like others who ordered this as well, it was just to die for, the squid was just so tender.
My main I got the barramundi wrapped in pastry. It wasn't anything great. The fish itself was nice, but it was supposed to be in a bernaise sauce, which there was hardly none of, and then the veges, I must say tasted like they were frozen. A salad would have been far better. The restaurant itself is nothing flash, but in a way that is what I like about it, it isn't trying to be something it isn't. However, improvement in the 1980's style seating would be a suggestion. This restaurant has so much potential, just slight things they need to improve on. I will be back to this place again, I know what to expect with it.
Don't go to this restaurant expecting big things and you won't be dissappointed - expect local family value with ok meal - you don't have to do the dishes !! It is a nice (not great) night off for any family.
The location is what you go for, sit back enjoy yourself and don't take everything so serious, you're not paying outrageous prices. Like the food everything is average and sometimes that's OK!
Perfect location, but thats where the good stuff really ends. Thankfully, as a group of friends we were busier enjoying our company rather than the food. With the possible exception of the barramundi (wrapped in pastry) and the steak, the rest of the food seemed mass produced and frozen and prepared with little care or presentation. Not really great value.
The service is sufficient, but occasionally belligerent, and when we asked for table water, none arrived only to be told at the end that "we are not obliged to give you any because we are BYO" which anyone knows is a shoddy practice (where responsibility for patrons health and wellbeing under the NSW liquor law encourages them to do so as a venue policy and in accordance with best practices).
Shame a restaurant in such a perfect location seems more concerned about increasing profit than good food and good service. Maybe if this attitude changed they might find themselves fully booked every night.
Well this restaurant has a lot of potential, but sadly that's all I could say about it.
Went here on a saturday night and the place was empty! (which was great because I was with my boyfriend, but it does say something about the food!)
The chairs are plastic and covered in what looks like 80s style carpet!
The seafood was very unimaginatively prepared- pretty much what you would get at a fish and chip shop. We ordered the seafood platter (the most expensive thing on the menu) which was ok but arrived with french fries that tasted like they were bought from McDonalds!
The menu is very simple and uninteresting but it's so disappointing because this place is in such a great location with beautiful waterviews! I really hope this place gets a makeover because it's in such a nice location.
A beautiful Saturday night with amazing Harbour views, so why was the restaurant almost empty? Could it be because everyone but our group knew the food was all frozen? Or that the specials were the same as the normal menu, but tricked up with slightly different sauces? or that the kitchen staff couldn't be bothered to present the dishes attractively?
My lemon sole, (which I know would have to have been frozen as it's not local) was slapped on top of the chips and the salad, rendering them both soggy, and the barramundi was served in a similar fashion. All the meals were adequate, but uninspired.
While the staff were reasonably amiable, they didn't show much interest in their work, and we were left feeling we had been a minor nuisance. We had the distinct impression of a restaurant that's lost its way, but we won't be back to help it.
I took some friends there on what turned out to be a very rainy saturday lunch. The view was like an impressionist painting. The food was beautiful - 3/4 people thought so the other just thought it was "good" but had chosen battered fish.... and it was good value. BYO worked well. Ultimately it fined up and the harbour view again did not disappoint.
