What has happenned to the Peasant's Feast? has it changed owners? We had a great meal here 2 years ago after taking up friends recommendations. We decided to return and had the most disapppointing experience. I started with chicken soup (surprisingly bland) and then had the cassoulet that was so good last time. What was a hearty, savoury meat filled stew had become bland with a scrawny lamb shank and duck leg.
The meat quality had really gone down. My wifes food was similarly bland and disappointing. The chocolate tart was dry and the portion was frustatingly small. Not surpisingly the restaurant was near empty. Such a shame as our first experience was so positive.
We should have known to leave when the wait staff seemed to be more lost than we were at the front of the restaurant. Having waited at the entrance for about five minutes while the waiter walked aimlessly around, almost trying not to notice us, we were seated. As this place prides itself on organic ingredients, we were expecting decent fare and were willing to pay that little extra for it, however, what happened next was shambolic.
We decided on the vegetarian platter as it sounded interesting (and one diner being vegetarian). The waiter arrived with a platter but didn't give us any plates to eat it off, maybe we were supposed to eat it off our laps? The food arrived and it looked as if it was cooked last week!, everything was either burnt or frizzled and dried, and completely tasteless (except for the undesired burnt charcoal taste!).
We decided that this was unacceptable and asked the waiter had this food been cooked fresh (I suppose the 2 minutes wait for the platter answered this question) and he replied yes but when he actually looked at what he served us he hesitated, and said that he would bring it back to the kitchen, but we just left hungry and disappointed. I highly recommend not going to this restaurant.
Ate here in January 2009. Was checking this place out to see if I would bring a group of friends. Was denied an entree size salad that was on the blackboard menu because it was a "mistake" and should have been a main size. Decided to go with another entree (only), then miraculously (after the waitress checked with the chef twice) I was allowed to have the entree salad as well. Note that it was never removed from the entree section of the blackboard menu.
I felt sorry for the waitress that she was the front-line messenger for the tyrant out the back. Main meal sizes are small, given the price tag, and the restaurant did not honour the set price for 2 courses that was advertised on the website. I would not go here again or recommend the place because there is a lack of customer focus.
I remember this restaurant being the most fantastic place 4 years ago. We suspiciously asked if it was under new management, they said it has been under current management for 4 years, which is when I think it really went downhill. I kept saying to my friend if I see that strange crazy man who floated around the restaurant like a lost uncle, we would not go in. Luckily we didn't see the him and went in.
Food 7 I ordered the casulette, I expected prison slop, however, was very pleasantly surprised with the quality and portion of the meal, nice portion of duck, sausage and lamb shank, gave it an 8 out 10. My good fussy friend ordered the Greek Beef Hotpot, nice quality tender beef, however, only squeezed out a 6 out of 10. My friend called it good honest food but hardly a feast, it was like a casserole you would cook at home on an off night.
Ambience 5 well the ambience was not to die for. I note the Dell Computer screen bolted onto a plank of wood, strung up in the window, need I say more. Well yes, the place just just looked messy with little style. It was just so good 4 years ago prior to the Organics taking over. Very tacky. They could really lose the Hansel & Grettle bread pieces on the seat prior to walking in.
Service 6 if it wasn’t for the strapping young hot bottle blonde geeky cute male waiter, the service score would be less. They did try hard but they were quite inexperienced.
I've eaten at this organic restaurant several times over the last 3 years because I love it so much. The food and service are always excellent and reliable. I found out about it because I was interested in organic food, and when I saw that they also had a lot of vegetarian, I had to try it. Not only do I think that the dishes taste great, but also my friends and relatives that I have brought there have had a truly wonderful experience, and that includes all the different kinds of dishes whether they be vegetarian, poultry, meat or seafood.
When I looked at some of the negative reviews on this website I was really horrified, but they are eccentric or pedantic or maybe just malicious. I honestly urge anyone reading this to ignore the bad reviews, they are simply not true. Also, this restaurant really stands for something very important, because it serves healthy food like of which is not available anywhere else. Because of its high standards and ethics, it demands fair reviews that truly reflect the food and the service.
We the public all deserve really healthy food, but generally we can't get it except at this certified organic restaurant, which also happens to serve really tasty food.
I had walked past this place many times and finally decided to eat with friends. It wildly exceeded my expectations, especially because healthy food made without any sugar is usually bland. After sharing a raw salad and the dips, we had the chicken and the pork; the tastes were terrific and vivid. The homemade desserts of creme brulee and chocolate tart were also marvellous. This is now my favourite restaurant and I can hardly wait to try other dishes on the menu.
Went to Peasant's Feast last night, excited to try this organic restaurant but was quite disappointed. The service was not great and the food was just average or below and I was hoping for great. Interesting to note that reviewers lemonlime and orangetwist both gave it rave reviews, anyone else think their usernames look similar, they have only posted a review about Peasant's Feast and posted a few days apart. I'm just saying...
I ate at this restaurant with 3 friends and it was a great experience. We all thought that all the food dishes had yummy and original tastes. We were told by the staff (who were very helpful) that this was because the food was organic. We didn't know anything about that, we were just looking for a nice place to eat in Newtown and we noticed that this restaurant had both meat and vegetarian food which suited all our different tastes.
I had a cassoulet which was really scrumptious, and I tasted the vegetarian crepes. There was even gluten free food which I sampled by getting a vegan chocolate icecream from the dessert menu. We all want to come back to this place to try more dishes bacause they have a big selection. The service was a bit slow, but the waiter explained that my cassoulet was cooked slowly, and let me say the wait was worth it.
Obviously another one trading on their history and past achievements. My last visit was dreadful. My duck which was delivered long after the other meals at the table was oily and had seen better days. The standard of the presentation was poor and all people at the table were equally disappointed with their offerrings. The carrot mash (which was runny and contained whole pieces of carrot that missed the mashing process) would have looked more comfortable in a school canteen. The entrees were marginally better but certainly not good enough for a repeat visit.
The tapas were not as described on the menu: tasteless boiled corn had been substituted for the potato salad. Corkage was outrageous at $4 per person, seeing the restaurant was unlicensed! In any case not all in our party drank wine.
Vegan food was bland and unimaginative with the Vegan Platter’s best being described as an attempt at highbrow salad. The carrot mash accompanying the lamb shank was a tasteless airline-style blob. The duck was pedestrian and did not contain very much duck at all! Again the taste was bland. The only saving graces were the beef hot pot which was tasty and also the table cloths which added a nice homely touch. The owner was attentive and well customer-service oriented.
As with the great majority of restaurants, this one could do with some sound-absorbing drapery on the walls. This would add to the comfort of the over-40’s diners, some of whom have hearing problems when there is ambient noise (ie) voice-echoes from surrounding tables)
All in all the concept of an organic-style restaurant is an excellent one which taps into an increasingly strong niche-market. Now if the Manager could add taste to the dishes (and a little more bulk and style to some of them) then these reviews would probably weigh more on the “great food” side rather than the “would not go back” opinions.
