I just do not understand some of the negative reviews on this website for this restaurant. I've been having dinners here for over 5 years and I've found that the food is consistently great. I've brought many different friends with me and they have all loved the food, whether it be meat, chicken or vegetarian. The flavours are so vivid and tantalising, and they excel in this respect with the vegetarian which I think must be difficult to achieve.
Where else in Sydney can you find totally organic meals like this, and a big selection to boot. It's true that there is no salt or sugar in the dishes, so what you are left with is the actual taste of the basic ingredients and so the flavours are very different to all other meals. But I really appreciate tasting the actual ingredients and not the salt and sugar additives.
I also think that they use their organic herbs and spices very creatively to produce authentic flavours (rather than the bottled and canned flavours used by most other eateries). I'll be eating at this place for many years to come.
The chairs are uncomfortable and the service is slow. The Cassoulet was smallish in size and ordinary in flavour, what should have been a gorgeous combination of quality organic duck legs, duck fat, thyme, rosemary, bouquet garni, white beans, pork belly pork snags (and other odds and ends) was anything but that.
But, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and returned for a second time. On my second visit, I had the Beef Stifado but it was just abject. It did not have (the classic Stifado) flavour. There were no pieces of Feta cheese, no olives, no evidence of herbs and no imagination. My parents shared a plate of vegetables which they confirmed was equally dire.
I think the cooks are frightened of using salt because they've seemingly put a moratorium on its use? Surely a modest amount of salt in the food is needed to draw out the flavour of the ingredients. But the apparent lack of salt in the dishes ended up being embarrassing for me. Especially when I had to ask for another salt shaker because the one planted on our table was completely empty (which made me wonder how much salt the poor patrons must have to use to get the food to taste of anything).
Joyfully, both the chocolate tart (with ice cream) that my Mum ordered and the crumble (with ice cream) that my Dad ordered were nice. This restaurant is expensive and was nowhere near being a feast. Consequently, I cannot recommend this place.
Been there regularly over the years, but becoming more and more disappointing. Food was quite bland overall, the decor is tired and it doesn't feel all clean and even if the waitress was quite friendly, this may be the last time I give it a go.
Service was bad to non-existent (there was only 1 waiter and it took 4 attempts at asking for the bill to get to see it). The restaurant appears to pitch itself as a relatively cheap alternative, but was quite expensive for what was available in the end. We will not be coming back.
Lovely, lovely, lovely. We were walking down King St, and this place stood out as being different. We thought that the senior staff was a bit excentric at first but not at the end of the meal. He's a doctor so how could the food be any good. Well, it was lovely, lovely lovely. And our standards for restaurant food have risen.
Maybe its because its organic, maybe its the chef, maybe its both. We had cassoulet, chicken and a vegetarian vegetable platter, and we went to heaven and then came back for the tasty but suger free desserts. We will return so that we can go to heaven again.
I went with 3 of my friends not knowing what to expect especially because of the mixed reviews. This was an awesome experience, and I will be spreading the word. The food was the tastiest I've ever had. Maybe because it was organic. I don't know. But the vegetable crepes were terrific, the chocolate tart was just right, and I tried my friends dishes like the beef stiffado and the spinach parcel and they were so full of flavour. The waiter was really spunky and polite, went out of his way to help. I will certainly be back.
Visited with a group including vegos, vegans and eat-anythings. The menu looked interesting, with choice for all. Should have taken note of past reviews, though. My entree and main lacked salt and were all but tasteless, including the garlic bread! There were a few other tables, but they were by no means busy, so waiting 45 minutes for mains seemed way too long. Confusion with the bit-sized desserts left everyone annoyed. All in all, not worth the prices, decor old and tired and won't be back.
Having read some of the other reviews, our group of four approached this as an adventure! We were not confident of a great result, but were pleasantly surprised. There were no other diners, which was not a good sign, but others nights there seems to be a fair number as we have gone past. The menu variety is terrific.
Very tempting dishes, and with vegetarians and vegans in our party, as well as fish and meat eaters, this is a rare place that can cater well for everyone. The service was fine, but could hardly have been anything else. The food was tasty and distinctive. The serving sizes were fair, but certainly not feast-sized and, being organic, were a bit on the expensive side (not outrageous). They do group-feasting as a special arrangement, which might be worth trying.
A wine list would be a useful addition, given the style of food and the prices. Desserts were simple, smallish, but very tasty. The atmosphere was nice, with good decor and music. But with no other customers there was a lack of a vibe. The hosts were attentive and genuinely interested in our "organic experience". They offer a 10% discount for a return visit, and we will do that
Went here 5 years ago and it was excellent, no longer. Hastily heated up food, with a distinctly yesterday flavour. Empty, so obviously word had got around!
What has happenned to the Peasant's Feast? has it changed owners? We had a great meal here 2 years ago after taking up friends recommendations. We decided to return and had the most disapppointing experience. I started with chicken soup (surprisingly bland) and then had the cassoulet that was so good last time. What was a hearty, savoury meat filled stew had become bland with a scrawny lamb shank and duck leg.
The meat quality had really gone down. My wifes food was similarly bland and disappointing. The chocolate tart was dry and the portion was frustatingly small. Not surpisingly the restaurant was near empty. Such a shame as our first experience was so positive.
