This restaurant remains one of Sydney's hidden treasures. It is sound all round. Daily specials are interesting and flavourful. Wine list is basic but there is something there for all tastes and pockets. Ambience is fine and its charm is that it takes the diner back to yesteryear in The Rocks. Another visit is certainly on my agenda...
I have always loved the Palisade Hotel, with the old world rustic charm. When you walk inside (asides rom the pokies) it takes you back in time. Well, we ventured up to the restaurant and found another jewel waiting. The menu has a selection of around 5 entrees and mains, but caters for all tastes you may have on the night. The wine list is the only let down, no aged wine and the bottle selection for what you would drink now is mediocre at best. The service was exceptional, no faults.
If you haven't been to the Palisade before, make sure you run off the meal by walking up to the roof. It is a hike but well worth the effort. (Just quietly, take a glass of champagne with you and enjoy a bit of romance)
The Palisade Dining Room serves quality food in a French Bistro style. The wine list is quirky with some nice bottles from small producers, the Bindi Chardonnay is a powerful example of cool climate Chardonnay. The dining room is unexpectedly refined given the retro charm of the 'local' bar downstairs where the carpet emits complex aromas of spilled beer and rising damp.
Walked inside this old, noisy pub not too sure of my choice for the night, only to be agreeably surprised by a charming quiet dining room, friendly reception on arrival, fine dining service throughout and very tasteful, wholesome meal. The food was a little slow to come out but a great experience for a quiet lazy night for 2 or with friends. Try to get front room with bridge views.
A group of us ate here on Melbourne cup day so the menu obviously wasn't a standard one. We thought the food was OK but variable and didn't in any way justify the $95 per head price tag! This makes it hard to settle on a number so I've been generous and given it a 7 (I didn't have the cheese!), but ungenerous with the value mark. Portions were on the small side, and they semed to skimp on strange things; for example we had 2 small bowls of potatoes between 6 people - something not expensive that they could have filled us up with, while the serve of lamb was reasonably generous.
The bread that was offered was simply slices off a not terribly fresh loaf, while the olive oil for the dip seemed to be good quality. Lamb chops were very nicely cooked but the gnocchi it came with was very poor - like chewy, overdone mash. Those of us that chose the Cheddar with Lavosh & figs option were very disappointed - one tiny piece of soft, cheap tasting cheese and 2 slices of dried fig.
One highlight was the nougat that arrived with the coffee, which was delicious. Service was good though. Probably won't bother with the food again, though the hotel downstairs looks good.
A really good pub restaurant in an interesting setting. The food used fresh seasonal produce and was very enjoyable. I came this night with a large group which can always be difficult for the venue but the service was very friendly and willing, plus the food came without undue delays. The dining room itself has character but can get quite noisy. The steep stairs to the dining room would make a pram difficult but not impossible.
Service was slow - 45 minutes before entrees arrived with only a small slice of bread while we waited (and it wasn't a busy night). We didn't get the steamed vegetables or a bottle of mineral water we ordered, but were charged for them. Food was good, but not great. For $197 for three courses, a mineral water and a bottle of wine, it wasn't good enough.
Six of us went last night with two English friends about to head home to the UK. Great Hotel in a great location in the heart of the 'real' Rocks as opposed to tourist central. Food was excellent - we had three courses each and the only slight disappointment was the chocolate eclairs. Otherwise we loved the lot. Wine was a little pricey - I balk at paying $49 for a $14 dollar bottle of wine from the local. Only issue was our waitress who while efficient, had to be asked for everything - nothing was offered. Not friendly or helpful at all. But all in all, recommended for a casual night out.
