Outstanding coffee and really good food. I have also had dinner here (when it turns into a Thai restaurant). The whole cornershop feel makes it very cosy and unique.

I went there for brunch on saturday, and it was dreadful. The coffee was good, but my meal wasn't. I ordered a burger with chips, which was very expensive and the portions was very small. Also the chips were still half frozen.
The service there is horrible. The staff was rude and most of them did not understand english! Also, when I received my meal, the staff forgot to bring the cutlery and didn't apologize. He just sniggered and walked away. They also forgot to bring my coffee, which I had to go to the counter and ask for it.
There were also two young children who were screaming and playing games with the teenager. The senior staff is a nice man, but was talking to a customer, while everyone is waiting at the counter. A waste of money, wouldn't recommended to anybody.

I had lunch here recently with a friend. I had the chicken schnitzel burger which was delicious, the schnitzel wasn't greasy and I think it was coated with Japanese breadcrumbs which gave it a nice crunchy texture. The servings aren't large, however, I think that this is reflected in the prices.
They also have a number of home made cakes that are worth the price, for any caramel lovers make sure you try the caramel round, it's the best I've ever tasted.
Service can be a little slow at times, however, in all I think this is a really lovely cafe.

Noticed the sign advising that the shop/cafe is a Thai restaurant from 5.00 pm. Phoned and made a booking for last Friday night. What a gem! Terrible weather outside but cosy and warm inside. Had a table in the front section and enjoyed looking at the nic-nacs between courses. Very good value. Starter plate was delicious, especially the chicken satay stick and peanut sauce. A must have is the duck in plum sauce. The duck is fat free, tender, crispy skinned, boneless and is served on a bed of baby bok choy with beautiful aromatics, absolutely delicious. Great place, will be back for sure.

You're right Reco, these reviews are old! I just recently went to the Palace Pantry for a Thai meal and I would go a lot more often if I lived in the area. The red duck curry and the pad thai were my favourites. There was a review on the restaurant in the paper a few weeks ago which said the cook there is a trained Thai chef, and in my experience, all the staff are friendly.
You can get food just as delicious and well-presented as in the posh eateries in the CBD for much less here, and if you can get a seat in the front part, it's a lovely restaurant to dine in, not at all pretentious. Wish it was my local!

I feel that I should review Palace Pantry because it has been done up recently and most of the reviews on this web-site are very old and distort the picture. Palace is a great local for coffee, breakfast and/or lunch. I have not been for dinner but I hear that they are now serving dinner too and are licensed. It was refurbished (and the kitchen size increased) in late 2006 and since this time they have started to served proper meals, rather than just corner shop food.
The staff are friendly, especially the owner who always makes an effort to acknowledge people that he has seen before. You will not get great, polished professional service because a lot of the people working there are school kids. But do you really want any more at you local corner cafe?
The food is good. Nothing pushing the boundaries, burgers, risotto, salads etc. Prices are good. They were a bit high for a while but have come down substantially. The coffee is good too. The thing to remember about Palace Pantry is that it is a corner store/cafe/restaurant. You should go there because it has a great atmosphere, the staff are friendly, the food is satisfying and you feel as comfortable as you would at home.

I agree with other comments - it is overpriced and service isn't the best. My husband had a hamburger ($11.50) which didn't come with chips so he ordered a side of chips ($6) which was a very small amount of thin chips that were the frozen chip kind, not the nice thick cut chips you hope for from a cafe.
I had banana bread (about $6 I think) which came with fresh bananas on top (nice!) and the tiniest amount of ricotta in a side dish (not enough!). They forgot about the coffee we ordered so I had to remind them.

The coffee is great but they didn't ask if we wanted seconds so we had to go up to the counter and ask! The owner is lovely but needs to improve on the service.

The food is average and highly overpriced and the service is shocking. As for the ambience the owner had his 5 years old son busking with a violin, very cute for the first few minutes but excruciating after my whole ten minutes stay.
