I treated my mum to a lunch here with the family late last year, it was fantastic! The food is great, the staff are great and I suppose you're getting what you pay for. It's definitely one of the better run restaurants in Manly!!
Last Saturday brings my total visits to OOA to 3. Could not rave about the place more the first time (now 3-4 years ago), the second time I suggested the place as something new to my girlfriend and a group of her friends and I thought the size of the meals was small and recall weighing up what fast food meal I would be getting on the way home.
Last night was for a friend's bday celebration, we booked a table for 13 and my friend was contacted on the night at 4:30 pm to be told they may have an issue squeezing us all in, he made the booking over a week before and was told at that stage they had no bookings! I had my hesitations when I arrived but saw that the ambience and non-pretentious feel of the place had not changed, all to the credit of the place.
There were no issues with the table but I do recall it being rather cramped in the restaurant. I had the chicken pastry dish to start and went with the signature lamb dish for main. I would suggest steering clear of both if you prefer less sweet in your savoury. Kahlua and Baileys crepes were awesome.
Service was pretty ordinary, one of the waiters seemed to misunderstand our orders and make it an ordeal, another waiter seemed to have an issue with volume, each dish that arrived at our table was announced to the restaurant (not-intentionally).
Would I go back? Not straight away but worth a first try for something different to your run-of-the-mill Modern Australian.
Always love Out of Africa. Been here a few times with my friends and last week went for my grandmother's birthday. I rang ahead to let the staff know to see if they could do some special stuff for her (like a cool dessert or whatever) and when we got there, almost every waiter/waitress said happy birthday to her, turned down the lights and sang happy birthday to her with cool sparklers and a funny birthday hat.
I was extremely impressed with their service and previously have never had qualms. The food, as always is superb, I tried the cinnamon and lime cheesecake that night, to die for. And as always the lamb sosaties (the dish I've gotten every single time I go) was fantastic. Will always recommend Out of Africa to anyone.
We had heard rave reviews about the food at this place but had also been warned of the bad service. We chose to go and give it a try. The warnings were spot on. We were initially forgotten and all the waiters rushed past us and didn't once stop to give us menu's or to check we were looked after. One of the guests at my table got up and chased down a waitress only to be told to sit as she'd be over soon.
This was after 30 minutes of waiting for a wine menu! After 45 minutes and still nothing, I got up and demanded to be looked after, saying we'd walk out if we didn't have menu's within the next 5 minutes. 2 minutes later I had a menu thrust in my face (clearly to make a point) and then he said "Sorry - earth hour" as if that was to justify the bad service.
It's a pity that the night started so badly as the rest of the evening (after my demands to be served!) went brilliantly. The food was amazing. Undecided if I'll go back.
We went there as a surprise for my husband's birthday...had driven past for years and always talked about going there. The food was fantastic, the wine list catered to our tastes and the service was better than expected considering the restaurant was packed.
Only gripe is the heat. My goodness!! get some ceiling fans or turn up the air con! we eat out a lot and love to take our time to enjoy the experience...this time we ate and ran. could not handle the heat. My husband had to go outside to get some air. Will definitely go back but now know to book a table outside.
This place is fantastic - great food, always friendly - a little loud if you want privacy, but great for groups. The sub African lamb sosaites dish is the best meal I have ever had!
The lamb dish is excellent! The food is fantastic, but a little bit expensive for what you get. It's a nice location, and quite a nice place to eat, but it can get very busy.
I've been here twice now, the first time we arrived on a nice Saturday evening and thought we'd try our luck to see if we could get a table. They were booked out, but found a spot for us on the steps which I quite liked, I thought it was very bohemian and my boyfriend and I happily shared the mixed breads, ordered drinks and our meals. Unfortunately, they messed up our drink order and gave us a jug of sangria instead of two glasses of wine (!).
Our waiter apologised and told us it was on the house, so we were very happy and drank away. I got the Vegetarian Tajine, my boyfriend got the Afro BBQ Chicken. My veggies really just tasted like vegies cooked in pasta sauce, and the chicken was so full of bones that it distracted from what was probably quite a nice flavour. Eating perched on those steps proved quite awkward for myself, but my boyfriend really struggled and got so uncomfortable that we decided to scrap dessert and get an ice cream on the beach instead.
We asked for the bill and had to wait about half an hour to get it. Then found we had been charged for our "free" sangria. The waiter denied ever telling us it free, but grumpily took it off the bill anyway. We figured the service was sub-par, but decided it might have been tarnished by our drink order and sitting on the steps.
The second time we went there, we remembered to make a booking. We shared the Breathless Briouats, which were quite tasty and but more or less good spring rolls.
Dipping sauce was fabulous though. My boyfriend got the Divine Sub Afric Lamb Sosaties. Whatever I got was unmemorable by comparison and tasted like a chicken satay I could knock together at home. Had a delicious Moroccan chocolate cake for dessert. Decided to leave when two huge groups were sat next on either side of us at about 9 pm, which was a bit of a surprise. Waited over 40 minutes this time for the bill, after reminding them twice.
Overall, service is disappointing and restaurant is quite overcrowded. Some meals are amazing, others are very average and overpriced. Has quite a good novelty value if looking for something different, but I won't be going back again. Once is enough, and don't expect the price of the meals to reflect the quality of the service.
