After years and years of hearing numerous reviews (negative and positive) I finally tried it recently for a celebration lunch.
Unfortunately, it was very underwhelming. it wasn't bad but even more so, it certainly was not even remotely noteworthy and it boiled down to one single component: the food. I had 3 courses and it was universally very average. My companion mirrored my comments.
Better food, by far, to be had at other restaurants along the finger wharf (although I think even some of those have been gradually slipping over the years). A shame, it's a great destination for a dinner.
Good dessert. Main meal of steak (over $40) came out with just steak and sauce. Had to order vegies and potato on the side. Slightly pretentious but excellent and very attentive service. Personally, don't think it's worth the price tag.
We will not be going back to Otto. It has been going downhill over the past few years and is now well past its prime. The service was disgraceful and the food was, well, poor. We had guests from Melbourne and they were stunned at how bad a value it was. It was embarrassing.
Been there twice in 2 weeks (that says it all) definitely will be going back, both times being lunch, great wine selection as well, pricey but well worth it.
Had a fantastic night at Otto last Saturday night, home made pasta was to die for and my salmon was cooked to perfection. The dessert special was one of the best I have had in a while. Service was a bit slow to get going but once we were attended to all ran smoothly.
Best of all was the bill, I thought it was reasonable for what we had and less than I expected. I am looking forward to my next visit.
Tomato pannacota, give it a try I thought. Big mistake, ever tried eating a dish of cream with three bits of crispy toast and a knife? Some mistake surely. If I had been paying I would have sent it back but didn't like to make a fuss. Pork belly not great, skin rubbery, no crunch at all. Gave pudding a miss, couldn't be bothered after the first two courses.
Is it usual in Sydney to eat in the dark? We sat outside and had to use torches provided by the waiter to read the dessert menu. Oh, I did send my green tea back as it was undrinkable, murky and sludgy, someone must have thought it should be served as builders tea. Shouldn't they know these things?
Had a fantastic night at Otto. We found the service excellent, attentive but unpretentious and the food was wonderful. We waited just the right amount of times between courses. I thought the mark up on the wines was very reasonable.
What a disappointment. I agree, Mr Laws paid for this Chefs Hat. Service was slow, we waited over an hour for the meal. View is lovely but Sydney has that to offer in spades anyway. 8 Ravioli constitute a main, unbelievable. Much better value, food and service at a million other restaurants in Sydney.
The obvious attraction of Otto is its position by the harbour, and this is why I booked for dinner with two American colleagues. It is hard to beat watching the sun set over the city, but the food was disappointing at best. On arrival at 6 pm, we were the first there, and had booked in advance, but nonetheless were treated as lepers and only after insistence were we allowed to have a table outside - on condition we left by 8:30 so John Laws could have it back (yawn).
The service was OK, but my risotto was "stick in teeth" chewy rather than 'al dente', bathed in oil, and had the most soggy, lifeless sea creatures I have encountered decorating it. My colleagues' fish and chicken were OK, but nothing to write home about.
Considering the high quality of food available for the price elsewhere in Sydney this was very disappointing, but the ambience is nice. If you apologise in advance to your guests for the quality of the food, it is still a nice spot to spend the evening.
