Have enjoyed several meals at Osvaldo Polletti over the past 12 months. The menu choices are interesting and the Italian wine list excellent. Service is friendly and efficient and the food well-executed. The only drawback is the lack of sound-absorbing surfaces or furnishings - the noise level can be pretty fierce on a busy night. Good value for money overall.
The food was excellent, real traditional Italian cuisine. We enjoyed everything from the starters, to the main course followed by homemade gelato....fantastic! I do recommend to try the tagliatelle with sausage and porcini mushrooms. The service was attentive and very friendly nice people.
We found this restaurant on the Internet and wish we had read the reviews before we went! Service was fine but the food very average. Main pasta dishes were only slightly larger than the children's size that was also ordered and two mains were served cold. The meatballs were a huge disappointment and appeared to be a merely a cut up sausage! Very expensive for the portion size and quality of food.
Full of expectation. Had read reviews, including that of Herald writer, and anticipated finding something special at this restaurant. Not so.
Food was 'hit and miss'. Pasta shared to start was good, as was the fennel and apple salad. Main of pork belly was also good but the osso buco was a huge disappointment. Needed much longer in the cooking and certainly did not 'fall off the bone'. One piece of meat, tucked under the main portion, was exceptionally chewy and dry.
The gremoulata was bland- more a chopped parsley and lacking the zing of lemon rind or the bite of fresh garlic. Contorni were just 'so-so'. Potatoes with rosemary (?) were too firm and too oily for our liking but braised cabbage with pancetta was very good.
Service was attentive, particularly from the lovely softly-spoken young lady who took our order. Simon, wish we'd been there on the nights you visited. Yes, do know it was twelve months ago, but... Don't know that we'll be hurrying back.
My girlfriend and I stumbled across Osvaldo Polletti (we now know it as OP) about 9 months ago. We have since been there 6 times now and up until the last time (2 weeks ago) have raved to anyone who will listen about how great this place truly is.
We have eaten 3 courses on most occasions and supper a few times, each time the experience was better than the last. Traditional rustic Italian at it's very best. While our last visit was a little disappointing, you can't discount it on one off night.
Go there, you'll be as hooked as we are! A few Tips for new OP'ers. Make a reservation downstairs (more atmosphere). Do not BYO, the Italian wine selections are awesome (Prosecco in particular). Be adventurous with your selections (everything! is good). Tip the staff well. They earn it.
Finally!! A true traditional Italian eatery in Leichardt instead of the commercial bowl of pasta fodder! My partner and I decided to "drop in" on what looked a very busy restaurant and thankfully a spare table for 2 was available at 8 pm Friday night. The noise factor is high (but some people just need the self awareness that screaming in a restaurant is just inappropriate, hard to blame owners for that!).
The decor is clean and is simple but could be improved, some more of those family photos from what I assume are "back in Italy family shots" would do the trick up on the walls. The first delight is the wine list, all Italian varieties, thank you, there is finally a restaurant in Sydney willing to back themselves! So leave the BYO at home and enjoy the full Italian experience!
The food is modern yet simple and of high quality. The highlight was the special, Veal pan seared with rocket and parmesan, it was simple and delightful, the best veal I have ever had to be honest and matched the wine perfectly. Service was solid with plenty of smiles and time taken even though they were clearly "raced off their feet". Maybe this will be our new local. Go there, its cheaper than a flight to southern Italy!
Dinner with group of friends, noisy upstairs room, ordered from the antipasto menu for starters and although the food was tast, very small servings. The Mains were basically that, Ocean Trout was a piece of ocean trout on the plate, while the pasta serve was tiny, therefore, had to order extra sides to fill up. Did not bother with dessert, I understand the concept but think they need to be a bit more generous.
Great quality ingredients, simple very well executed and authentic rustic Italian. The pasta is superb. Service can be a bit haphazard when busy but the food is worth the wait and the value is hard to beat. However, if you're after a massive bowl of stodgy over sauced pasta, this is not the place for you.
We were attracted by the low lights, interesting menu and simple decor. The service was prompt but they certainly didn't make any extra effort.
The food itself was expensive for the portion size, and unremarkable. The mushroom ravioli was overcooked to the point of falling apart on the fork, and the rabbit papardelle sounded more interesting on paper. Don't bother with the (dry) flatbread either. The tomato salad was nice, but I would advise you to chop up a punnet at home and save your cash!
One of the best dining experiences I've had on Norton St. The food was delicious and interesting, definitely a step above the stock standard Italian fare and the service was great. The waiters were funny and made for a lively night out. The waiters also gave great advice and explanation of the menu. I can't understand the bad reviews and my experience was fantastic and would highly recommend it!
