Have been meaning to eat at this restaurant for ages, finally ate here this week and we were delighted. The food was outstanding, fresh and flavourful regional Italian with some really interesting dishes, and the space is lovely with the candles and paintings and low music. We shared a starter of gently spiced olive tapenade and fresh ricotta with toast, which was delicious, I had a main of stuffed trout with almonds and my friend had a fresh pasta dish with beef and rosemary which she loved.
The servings were very generous, we had trouble getting through everything but we managed! We brought our own wine but I think next time I would try theirs, they have Italian wines that would probably have gone well with our meal. We finished off with the best affogato I have ever seen.
The service was friendly and attentive, there was a wait between our courses but for a relaxed evening we didn't mind the pace. And it was great value for the quality of food. Sounds like the reviewer below had a bad night... can only say that ours was great and we will definitely be back.
We choose this restaurant almost purely on the basis of the fairly good reports on this website. Oh how wrong we were!
Booking was made for a table of four for 7.30pm. We arrived and were taken to our table almost instantly which was great. The restaurant is small and cosy which is fine, and the lighting is dull which can make it hard to read the menus.
We were left with the menus and water was brought to our table. This was around 7.45pm. Our order was not taken untill at least half an hour later at 8.15pm. This is when the waitress told us they were one wait person short. We ordered bruschetta and garlic bread and all our mains. Our bread arrived ten minutes later at approximately 8.25pm.
This is where the downhill run began. After 2 beers, 2 bottles of wine and 40 minutes later, the waitress finally came to us and said our mains were the second table to come out. She then went to the table behind us and said that they were the next table up which was fine. During the 40 minute wait period, a table of 10 people were seated just near us. To add insult to injury, the table of ten received their mains before our table, and the table behind us that were supposed to be before us.
We asked to see the staff. On his arrival, we told him we wanted to pay for what we had already consumed, and leave. His only offer to compensate us for the lies and the 2 hour wait was one free dish, which we refused and just was we started to get up to leave, our mains magically arrived.
In the end, they gave us the meals for free, as they were probably going to throw them out anyway. Which they should of done because on our arrival home to sit down to eat, one of the meals had a hair in it, and the chicken was a dry as the Sahara. Never again.
The food was extremely good. Great size mains which were cooked immaculately and presented as well as they tasted. Service was also fantastic. Any bad reviews I had read before going were blown away by the experience.
It was a cold, wet night, we had an event in Glebe so didn't want to go far and we didn't want to eat in a draught or outside. So we tried this Italian eatery. We bought a bottle of excellent Italian red and enjoyed main courses (rabbit casserole, I always chose dishes I rarely or never cook and steak and chips) and shared a dessert.
The food was good Italian peasant food in the style of Claudia Roden and the service was knowledgeable and friendly. The only minus was the parking which thanks to the local council works has been reduced hugely and led to the closure of 6 business in Glebe Point Rd, we were told. We left warm, well-fed and looking forward to going dancing!
Like some previous reviewers, we also found the food a little disappointing. It was quite ordinary and certainly nothing to write home about. On the other hand, the service was first-class. Our waitress was friendly, helpful and efficient and the dishes came out in double-quick time. And they obviously have a loyal following, judging by the crowds.
Being the Saturday night of the Easter long weekend, we took the precaution of booking ahead. When we arrived at 7.15 pm it was still fairly empty, but quickly filled up and by 8.00 pm, there was hardly an empty table. But by that time, the combination of hard surfaces, narrow spaces and tables packed closely together had created a very noisy environment, making conversation difficult. There is another section at the back, which may have been somewhat less noisy.
Apart from that, though, the atmosphere is pleasant and lively but this place is definitely in need of some redecoration to freshen up its image and tone down the noise. Hand-towels in the toilets would also be a welcome addition. With our Entertainment Bk discount of 25% (up to max $30) our bill for four came to $122 and that included two starters, four mains, a table salad, two drinks, a single shared dessert and a single coffee. We brought our own wine.
You’ll find Osteria in the heart of the Glebe Point Rd dining strip. For some reason, all the parking meters have been removed from G.P. Rd, so we enjoyed free parking but that may be a temporary reprieve, something to do with the road upgrade works taking place (watch out for the raised kerb).
Me and a few friends went to this restaurant last night for the first time. Surprisingly we were offered one free drink each. It was not a busy night, service was fabulous and orders came out relatively quick. Food taste was a little plain, but still acceptable, the waitresses were friendly and helpful. I must say that I was a little bit horrified when I read some reviews below, but maybe it was not a busy night so I didn't have a bad time in this restaurant.
This was our first time at this restaurant and we were very impressed. This must be one of the most authentic Italian restaurants in Sydney. The dishes we tried were flavoursome and perfectly prepared and presented. The restaurant has a homely feel, family friendly and for a Saturday night the service unexpectedly prompt!
It has an excellent ambience and we were entertained by a talented Italian tenor. It was a great night, we will definitely be back and I would thoroughly recommend to all.
We were four booked for 7'ish Saturday night. Service was pleasant and attentive. Bit surprised by the wall-mirror specials, instead of entrees and mains, they were wine specials, made the place look a little bit wine-bar.
Deep-fried olives for starters were pleasant, stuffed zucchini flower, strangely in a cheese/tomato sauce, was great. The sardines in grape leaves started out terrible, mouth full of 'salted anchovie', but then the honey/herb sauce started to show.
You have to enjoy mashed potato, as the chicken, and the osso bucco were each placed on a mountain in far to large a serving plate. The idea of traditional, and sometimes ancient, recipes did not translate to an exceptional experience.
Mouth watering, inspiring menu, great service but very disappointing food. Stodgy and not very flavorsome. Had lots of great ingredients but turned into something you couldn't really distinguish. Expensive too.
