My partner and I came here for a quick dinner before watching Phantom of the Opera. Good thing was there were plenty of time to spare because the food took some time to come out.
It was a Wednesday night, and they has a $10 steak special and it was great! So, even though it took some time, the food more than made up for it. I highly recommend going there on a Wednesday for the steak.
Came here for lunch on saturday before watching a show at Lyric theatre. They didn't have my booking which was fine since the restaurant only had one table occupied. So food didn't take long to arrive but it was hard getting the waitress's attention when we wanted to pay the bill.
We ordered the lamb and smoked salmon salad which were both okay, the salmon (special) was better than expected and the rib eye was cooked well and was enjoyed by my brother. The only disappointing dish was the oscars pizza which was nothing special. Overall it was okay and we had the entertainment card to use, so we saved some money. Probably go to other venues around the area next time or just stick with coming here for friday/sat night drinks.
Visited with pals at 5.30pm yesterday as 1 of them had an Entertainment Book voucher. We ordered sangria, Greek lamb salad, marinated mushroom, capsicum and onion skewers, lamb cutlets, premium rib eye and tuna steak. I'm glad we were given a table despite arriving 30 minutes before our reservation time! Because we were early, the noise from the adjoining bar was bearable. The dishes took at least 30 minutes to arrive, and we waited for at least 10min for the bill. The dishes were tasty and reasonably priced. The lamb (Greek lamb salad) was slightly tough. We left feeling very full!
Don't order the 100% wagyu beef burger. Don't know about wagyu, but it was more like 100% no name processed hamburger pattie than anything resembling actual beef. Tasted awful too.
Food was disappointing - $30 rib eye was tough and overcooked. The replacement Barramundi that was ordered was uncooked and not fresh at all. Service was terse and inattentive. I would never go back.
Oscars is one of the best places where you can try generous size portion and very well prepared ribs. Every time we have guest coming over from overseas, we always make sure that we take them for a meal to Oscars. Music and atmosphere is fantastic, very friendly waitresses, big choice of food and the beverages and nice cocktails. It’s not an average pub, its nice place to spend Friday or Saturday night.
Oscars has truly lifted their game and turned their restaurant section around. I live locally and use to eat here every now and then but after an awful experience I haven't gone back till Thursday and surprisingly the service in particular has improved dramatically.
Instead of the backpacker waiters that were rude and arrogant, Oscars has employed some wait staff that have exceptional service skills. The waiters knew the food menu and drinks, brought everything on trays and held cutlery and drinks in the proper places. Eg. didn't hold the glass at the top where you drank from. (I'm an ex-restaurant manager so I notice these things. Hahaha). Most of all the waiters were extremely pleasant and didn't have the arrogant attitude that so many Sydney waiters have especially since I was dressed in a very casual t-shirt and jeans.
I'll definitely come back here and will be happy to suggest it to others as well.
After looking at the website, I thought the restaurant part was separate to the bar but it was unfortunately not and very loud for it, with little atmosphere and the opposite of intimate, with TV's and music playing in the background in the large, open plan area (much to my disappointment).
The staff however were friendly and efficent and looked after us well, and the food was ok/good-not great though. The pricing was reasonable (I had lamb cutlets for $20 and my boyfriend the ribs at $14 which made it quite cheap for two) and the wine list was also affordable.
The highlight of the meal was definietely dessert - they have a chocolate platter for 2 which I'd love to try but as we couldn't fit it in, we shared the chocolate fondant instead which was delicious.
I won't be coming back here for dinner for 2 again - the only thing this place is really suited for is dinner for a group on a night out drinking (and not a super-cheap dinner either).
