Have only been here once, and whilst the food is okay, okay doesn't really cut it in Balmain where there are so many other places to eat. Coffee is awful.
Food was awful. Went there for Sunday breakfast and waited about an hour for our food. The corn cakes had almost no corn in them, and the big breakfast had overcooked eggs served with a mound of sloppy tomatoes. Very overpriced for the quality of food. I would never go back.
Although this place is off the main road, I was so disappointed. We waited 45 minutes for our food and during a 1 hour lunch break, that's just not acceptable. The owner was friendly but that doesn't make up for slow service. There were 6 people lunching at the same time as us and each meal appeared to be prepared one at a time. I won't be going back. I don't even want to know how long it would take to get breakfast on a Saturday morning!
I was just back here last week. I had a chicken caesar salad and although the chicken was very tender, the salad was drowning in dressing and just not as nice as before. It seems to have slipped into the normal cafe thing. And it would have scored better on ambience if they got rid of smoking altogether - it's just not great to have to walk past a smoker before you can get to a table.
It took them an hour - yes an hour to get our food. I ordered the big breakfast and they had obviously done the hash brown and sausage first and then let them sit there for ages and the oil has formed a pool at the bottom of the plate. i felt very average the rest of the day. my sister had hers taken back because the corn fritter was burnt on outside and not cooked properly in the inside. i am not one to complain but has to be done.
This is one of the few places I've been back to several times in Balmain (I'm a local but I don't go out much). There are a couple of reasons. The view is one (right to the bridge) and it's off Darling st (I'm not one for watching bad parking and buses go past). The food is nice. I've been there for breakfast, brunch, and afternoon tea at various times. The breakfast could probably lose the hash browns (those rather odd square things that are deep fried) but it's otherwise well cooked and there are lots of other things on the menu that look tempting. Pancakes are nice too, as is the caesar salad. The hot chocolates are good (not being a coffee drinker, I think the measure of a good cafe is on the attention they give to this less popular drink).
Service is very nice, everytime I've been there they have been friendly. Other cafes in Balmain tend to be a bit snooty in their service (especially the busy Saturday mornings) but this place has been consistently good.
