Massively expensive for the minimalist offerings, no matter how tasty they are. Go if you're not that hungry and your wallet seems to be weighing you down.
I too have just come back to this site to find the phone number for my favorite casual Thai restaurant and am so suprised by the earlier reviews!
Where else can you find a waterfront, byo, value for money Thai restaurant with great food and a view in Sydney? At lunch time you can enjoy the afternoon sun and watch the world go by. By night the restaurant transforms into a more intimate space.
You can't go past the coconut prawns, chicken larb and duck curry! And there's a great little wine list to match. I eat at Om Thai most weeks, and have never faulted it!
I stumbled across Om Thai during a business trip from Melbourne. The lunch menu was simple and the food was fantastic. Unfortunately I could not enjoy the Blue Tongue on Tap as I had to stay focused for my next meeting !
I also can't believe all of the negative comments this lovely restaurant has had. Yes it may seem a bit pricey but when you compare it to the quality of the other Thai places around, the standard of the Thai food at Om Thai is of a much higher standard not to mention the large serving sizes and the beautiful peaceful view.
I have eaten at Om Thai numerous times and have never walked away dissatisfied. Working near by and only having an hour lunch break I need something that is efficient and tasty. I have never had to complain about the food taking too long to be served, it has always been efficient.
This is definitely somewhere that I would recommend. Keep an eye out for great lunch special too i.e $10 Pad Thai.
Well in reality, the food is not fantastic and people who gave good comments on this review basically must be the staff or somehow related. Service wise too slack, not alert, menu wise too classic nothing special, change of chef too regular, no consistency.
As I live/work nearby I come here quite often for lunch with colleagues and friends. I popped on here to get the phone number to make a booking, and I must say I'm amazed at some of the negative comments below! OK, so it's not the cheapest Thai around, but how often do you get a Thai restaurant right on the waterfront? Besides, I think Om Thai are comparable in price to other Thai restaurants in Pyrmont, but are certainly in a much nicer location.
I think the food is really tasty and fresh. I particularly like the duck dishes (the duck curry or the duck chilli stir fry), and the dragon eye salad is nice in summer. The coconut prawns are also a favourite, although they're a special so they're not always on the menu (but they should be!). They're also licensed which many local places aren't - the wine list is small, but well considered with some nicely matched drops to choose from.
Overall, I think it's a great place to relax and enjoy a meal and a glass of wine with friends, and I'm happy to pay a little more to do that in such a lovely location.
After a pleasant walk around Sydney Harbour foreshore, my family and I dined at Om Thai located on Sydney Harbour. The waitress was very attentive and recommended the days specials which were new and interesting. My wife particularly enjoyed her starter of chicken Khao Soi noodle curry while the spicy tom soap followed by oven roasted duck stir-fry and fresh veggies was my favourite acting as a great fillip to an increasingly colder day.
With winter coming on I will certainly be coming back for more delicious Duck and trying the Lamb Shank special curry while my wife is eyeing off the whole fresh snapper fish with tamarin sauce. Maybe our next walk will be via the Sydney Fish Markets and we can hitch a ride back to Om Thai. For a family of 4 dining on Sydney Harbour, Om Thai offered extremely good value for money all topped off with Blue Tongue ales on tap.
Very disappointing. Highly over priced for the tiny portions. The most expensive thai I have ever purchased. The stir fry has no flavour at all. Confusing menu with lack of description.
My fiancee and I just returned from this culinary cesspool eatability is kind enough to call a restaurant. Where I come from (Outer Mongolia), such an establishment would be known as a 'chew and spew' such is the quality of the fare. By way of example, the seafood was clearly not fresh (the prawns were frozen and the calamari had a remarkably similar consistency to shoe leather). I know this because shoe leather is an old Mongolian favourite.
One is best advised to avoid Om's signature dish - a salad - as it was the worst of the night (even worse than the soft shell crab which tasted like fish guts). I'd like to be able to describe Om as cheap and nasty but it wasn't cheap!
The manager should make the chefs cook decent Thai food. The chefs seem to run this restaurant and cook whatever quality and dishes they like. I used to go there weekly but have given up and gone elsewhere. The value column represents the quality served.
