I just had Saturday lunch here with my family, including two ankle-biters. It was fabulous, the service was impeccable (down to providing textas for the kids to scribble on the paper table cloth). The food is delicious, and authentically Portuguese (saving you the fare to Lisbon), the seafood rice is exquisite, replete with fresh beasties throughout: and the chips ("fries"?) are as on the Portuguese can make them (for me the best in the world) definitely not to be missed.
Washed down with icy cool Casal Garcia Vinho Verde (young white wine) = an outstanding meal at a very reasonable price. What more could you want? Be there.
I thought that I had tried all of the Portugese Restaurants on this strip until a client gave O Pescador a very strong recommendation and I realised that I had not yet tried it.
Undoubtedly Spanish and Portugese Restaurants excel at sea food. But even by their very high standards, this family-style restaurant stands tall. The chargrilled octopus entree was tender, sweet and divine. I would travel across Sydney just for that alone. Barramundi fillets were lightly cooked with garlic to perfection and accompanied by a generous range of steamed vegetables. The squid was tender and delicious and accompanied by a fresh salad and Portugese chips to die for.
Portions were very, very generous, you had better be hungry. The chocolate mousse dessert was not the hoped for coup de grace, very sweet and not quite the right consistency. The coffee wasn't great either. On the other hand, the "house red" was more than quaffable.
Most of all, the service was very warm, friendly and attentive. We felt as though they really wanted to please us. Other reviewers below have commented on the authenticity, so what are you waiting for, just go!
My darling husband had the marvellous idea of taking me to this wonderful place for dinner on Sunday evening and what a treat it was. We were welcomed and felt like family from the moment we stepped in. I had the most delicious Creamy Cod with a salad and will be back for more as I would love to sample every other dish they offer. This is authentic Portuguese cuisine served with care and taste and I am truly grateful to have discovered it. I will be back for their Sardines.
This place is a genuine find. The BBQ seafood platter is a standout. The food is given the simplest treatment on the chargrill and the results are truly mouthwatering. The service was also welcoming and helpful and I shall return to sample the many other appealing items on the menu. Well done O'Pescador.
NB: The service score is based on a Sunday night. If I was to grade a Fri or Sat it would be 3. Perhaps, they need more staff on these busy nights. This restaurant has been a favourite of mine for a very long time and, unfortunately, the friendly family style has been compromised on a Friday and Saturday night due to the amount of people who frequent the restaurant.
Yes it is small and very cosy but I wouldn't recommend going on a Fri or Sat. We often go on a Sunday night, very quiet and very intimate service. But why do we return? The beautiful chargrilled seafood. MMM!! Yummy! I'm reluctant to advise people to go on a Sunday as I want the place all to myself, but I can sympathise with the reviewers who are disappointed with the service. I can only recommend that you go on a Sunday, but, please, not when I want to go as I love the food and the prompt service.
We had the most delicious food ever here and I can't wait to go back. Succulent prawns, tender octopus, tasty paella (even better than the one we had in Spain)! Service was friendly and mostly attentive. Great value, large portions - I have not complaints.
The other reviews were good as they prepared me for the slow service, oiliness and saltiness (which I was craving) but I can see how you might be disappointed if you had high expectations. Oh, and you have to try the desserts. Yum!
Coming from Macau ( a previous Portuguese colony for more than 4 hundred years ago ) nearly 2 years ago, I've been searching for an authentic Portuguese restaurant. After trying out more than a dozen or so, my family and I have found the very best in quality and value. The seafood is cooked to perfection and the meat dishes just as delicious. O Pescador, you have won my family and I.
Sunday lunch with six others, Prawns La Plancha and fried octopus were fantastic. Had the creamy baked cod, which was like a potato gratin with cod, very filling and could not finish it. Served complimentary bread and black olives.
The Portuguese passionfruit juice is just like a Passiona soft drink! Service good, waitress explained what was in each dish. Come for a leisurely lunch and enjoy watching the 'Portuguese grandma club' having their Sunday lunch with beer!
The food was rather bland and very very oily (I found a lot of the food I got in Lisbon was the same, esp in back street cafes used by locals). It was quite nice, especially the entrees - the battered calamari and prawns were very very good. But all the mains we had (4) while plentiful had way too much deep fried potato and they thought you were crazy if you didn't want it!
