What a great restaurant! Came here with some friends for my birthday after one of my favourite Greek restaurant was booked out. I was a little nervous about this place as I had booked for a large group, but I had nothing to fear.
The food was delicious and good value. The quality of ingredients was very good, although I was a little disappointed that there weren't any dolmades (rice stuffed vine leaves) and the keftedes tasted more like western meatballs. But the lamb fell off the bone and was so good.
The wait staff were very friendly (although very busy with the bottom whole floor dedicated to a 70th birthday). Definitely looking forward to returning to this restaurant.
Full marks to Nostos. The owner is so friendly, even making the booking was an enjoyable experience. We went on a wednesday night, it was full so lucky we booked. Even with a large group taking up half the restaurant our food was mostly out quickly, plus endless bread and water. And the owner's and their staff are so nice, especially Michos (?).
We got the banquet with 5 of us and it was a good amount of food. We were all full afterwards but didn't leave lots of it behind either. I am Greek and the white bait was the best I've had. The lamb fell off the bone. They threw in a potato cake with baked feta for free which was lovely and changed some of the meals as one of our party is a vegetarian and this was no hassle at all. The stuffed tomatoes we got were like my yiayia's.
The desserts were sensational with a walnut cake, the owner's mother bakes with yoghurt and honey on top. They didn't charge us any corkage (we opened 3 bottles) and even discounted it so it ended up being about $33 each for 3 courses, dessert and coffee.
This place has a nice buzz but I'd imagine there would be quite a din on a weekend with the live band. A few dishes are not "traditional" Greek ie the mushrooms, but they were all really good. This place is tops for food, value and atmosphere so I hope they can keep it up.
Tried to book here last night (Saturday) after having an amazing dining experience last Friday night, only to be told they were fully booked for good reason.
The four main ingredients that makes a restaurant successful, food, ambience, service, value, Nostos does to perfection. The service was possibly the best service I have received from any restaurant I have been to, personal and friendly would be how I would describe it.
The food was equally as impressive. We had the Saganaki chesse and trio of dips as entree. Paul our waiter kindly pointed out the trio is rather large and offered to downsize it for us including the cost. Glad he did as the mains were filling. The Arni was amazing, meat just pulled off the bone and melted in your mouth. My partner had the moussaka which she enjoyed. We shared a Galaktobouriko dessert and had a Greek coffee and sat back and listened to the band. The guys were great and really owned their instruments.
We were most surprised at the end of the night when we got the bill..$75 for 2 which for what we had was fantastic value. Overall a most enjoyable evening and we can't wait to go back.
16-11-08 - Perfect 10's! My partner and I dined here again on Sunday night and if anything the experience has only gotten better. I felt another review was warranted having walked away completely satisfied.
From the moment Paul greeted us at the door and to our surprise remembered our names (we haven't been for about 6 weeks and this was only our 3rd visit) until the time we left, it was an absolutely fantastic night.
Connie, Paul and Nick looked after us in ways we could never imagine nor expect.
The food as always was fresh, well cooked and plentiful, possibly the best calamari we have had. The service faultless, the muso's on fire.
Needless to say we have already booked again for this Sunday night and taking a group of people with us.
The main courses we had at this restaurant were good, fresh and well cooked. I was disappointed with the slightly tired whitebait and the oily, not plain, bread. Service was attentive and charming.
I'd be happy to return to Nostos, but never on a busy night. The shrieking of the people nearby was bouncing off the walls, a fog of cigarette smoke wafted off our other neighbours, the waiters rushed about, and the noise level generally was too high for conversation. Then the deafening bouzouki (I think) music began, no-one could hear anything at all, and we fled.
Came here on a Saturday night with two friends based on the reviews here and the fact that it's just up the road. But I came away a little disappointed about the food. The best part about the whole experience was our waitress, who was so lovely! It was refreshing to be treated so well by wait staff!
The calamari entrée was excellent, perfectly cooked and pipping hot when it arrived. The main I ordered was Arni which was a slow cooked shoulder of lamb, it was disappointingly dry and did not fall off the bone as I'd expect. I would advise everyone to stay away from the dessert menu, expensive and very ordinary.
Live music was played around 8:30 or 9 pm and the music was so excruciatingly loud that we could not hear each other when we shouted, it was like being at a night club, way too loud. We couldn't hear the waitress when she was shouting at us and she had to resort to attempting sign language to communicate.
I won't be going back and I'm a little confused about the great reviews, maybe we just went on the wrong night?
No wonder this place has great reviews! The host and staff make you feel very welcome and look after you like your visiting old friends, which is what alot of places now are lacking. I have been to a few of the restaurants at Norton St but this is the best by far. The food was mouth watering and delicious I usually don't go Greek as I find most of the time everything is drowned in oil but this place is superb. My favorite restaurant for 2008! Thank you Nostos you made my friends and I leave your restaurant wanting to come back for more!
Came in for dinner on a sunday night and had an amazing culinary experience! The host was not only knowledgable about the food but also showed a great passion for the dishes. It is obvious from the outstanding service and the cheerfulness of the staff that they are well looked after which I highly rate (and is very rare to find in Sydney).
The night started and ended with exceptional food. The night was sprinkled with complimentary tasters which were very well chosen. The standout dishes of the night were the keftedes (Greek meatballs in feta dip and salsa) and the swordfish.
You can easily forgive the limited dessert menu once you've tried the karithmelo (moist crumbled walnut cake with honey and yoghurt) and Galaktobouriko (Greek custard sandwiched between filo pastry). Despite their descriptions, the desserts were not overpoweringly sweet. My partner who does not like sweet desserts completely devoured both dishes!
The ambience is warm and inviting, real great for family/friends gatherings and for romantic dinners. Traditional Greek music played by very skilled acoustic guitarists makes the dining experience a festive occasion.
Absoutely fantastic, food was great, service was great! Not that expensive either. Best Greek restaurant I have ever found. I will be going there again.
This was a great dining experience from beginning till the end. The food was simply presented with outstanding fresh ingredients and flavours. The service was very caring, attentive and friendly. I recommend the $35.00 Banquet which is of exceptional value.
Once again can't add too much more to other positive reviews. Nick was a fantastic host and the service was excellent.
I can only comment on the Banquet menu and it was fantastic! The servings were small but there were lots of them and we could not eat another thing by the end. There was a negative comment about the shoulder of lamb in one review. Not sure where they were eating but ours was tender, juicy and very very tasty. Look forward to coming back soon.
