I will give you a little trivia; this place is owned by the granddaughter of the original No Name. The reviews lower I think were a little too kind for her food. I have been to a lot of establishment but this one has takes the cake. Walk past the kitchen when you arrive in on the way to the stairs.
Would not recommend this restaurant if you like any type of service at all. Staff left people standing in the door way waiting to be seated, would then point to the table that you should take. The bill was put on the table as soon as we had our food. It was very bright in the restaurant and the TV was distracting. The spaghetti had hardly any sauce, so was very dry and when asked for more sauce was brought some ketchup. This restaurant seemed OK for kids/families.
Ha, ha ha! Yes reading some of these comments is laughable. For a long time we used to get the meal deal at the cinema until we got the feeling we weren't really thought of as "valualble customers" and decided to look for something different. So we crossed Norton St. and entered No Name... and never regretted it since!
Yesterday we had 2 mini-combo chicken shnizel, one rocket salad and 3 latte, we got a bill for $33! The combo always comes with a nice salad and you have many choices you always have a basket of fresh bread and butter with it, you can have water with your meal too - come on what more do you want, the staff is helpful and friendly, nothing seems to be a big deal
I won't go as far as what someone sugested to those fussy reviewers to do, but yes he's got it really right for them! If you want "haute cuisine", yes you got to climb a few more stairs, but for a casual meal this is a good place and I can assure you, you won't be hungry for a while after your meal.
Cheap, no-frills food. I used to go to the old No Names in Surry Hills, and this one is certainly different to how I remember it, but it's the same concept, cheap, quick eats. Sure, it's nothing special, but if you don't want to spend too much money for a meal, then this may be the place for you.
I've had a read of the 10 reviews so far and I think it comes to this... you can cook and eat what you like, but if you're going out to eat and thus paying for it, there should be some basic standards in place. Having said that, I don't believe No Name qualifies as a "restaurant". The building looks quite nice from the outside and has a simple decor inside.
The main issues I think are, the service (which is seriously lacking, imagine dishing out a comment when a paying customer points out that a long hair has been cooked into the schnitzel??!!) and that the food is poor. The servings are huge, it's true, but they lack substance and taste. Two massive schnitzels is not a meal. It's excessive and it makes one nervous to think why they're able to throw them on a plate so cheaply. Why not just have one and have some chips/salad on the side?
I realise No Name refers to a "no frills" approach, but how hard it is to chop up some garlic, onion and perhaps some basil into your sauce (and minimise the amount of heart burn suffered by the current pure tomato paste served). And as for the plastic cheese, while it is something left to personal tastes, I still think that if you're paying for the dish, they could at least use cheese that actually melts. You don't except goats cheese or Jarlsberg at No Name, but even some grated No Frills Tasty cheese would do the trick (and not break the bank).
All in all, I've had better food (and service) for the same price or cheaper, so it definitely does not constitute value for money. Quality over quantity at all times.
I think all the people that have commented so badly about no names should go get stuffed! You can give constructive critisicm but you were all plain rude! I go to No Name almost every Saturday night and it has the best value for money. The servings huge with an average price of like $15...how cheap can you get? For the price you pay I think the food is great and the kids all love it there as well!
As for all the comments about the cheese ... so what if it's the 'plastic' cheese, you snob, have you tried it? It tastes so good with the cheese and sauce. I've had almost every meal and I havn't disliked any!. I think No Name is a fantastic restaurant with great food, great atmosphere and good service, just make sure you book so you can specify if you want a table at the front outside or inside or in the back courtyard. I disagree with all the negative things people have been saying about it becuase I go there almsot every saturday night with big groups and I always bring new friends there and I've never had any complaints.
It's a place that purly wants to make a profit for the night. I have only been once and the food was awful for the price. $18 for some pasta that was mediocre. oh.. and they charge for water. They say we are not charging for the water but (get this...) for the service. $1 a glass and $4 for a jug of tap water! Where/who do they think they are.
