Ok...here's the deal. The 1st time I went I was like, this is he best. I went back on three other occasions. The same order each time. Well, I'm not sure if they don't get it, but every other time my vegetables were not cooked. Maybe they just can't handle the heat in the kitchen. I don't mind paying for a good meal, but cook it- please! I must say the service has always been outstanding. Well done service staff. Kitchen staff, step up!
Maybe it's me, maybe I just don't understand 'Modern and Traditional Mexican' cuisine. Garlic bread & salsa (??), chummachangas (??), green mole chicken resplendent with plain old rolled tortilla, queasydellas - arggggh, too much flour, bland flavours, not great 'beans', uninteresting insipid rice, washed down with Sangria?
Friday night, got the bums rush, told them that we were in no hurry, so our meals were prepared anyway and put in the oven, as we found out when we were told after 10 or so minutes 'that the meals won't last much longer in the oven' What the hell is it with these restaurants ?
Why can't food be made to order and your request respected, not blatantly ignored? Hey, Owners/Chefs, listen, it really can't be that difficult, as a result of pushing us through you might have turned the table over another one or two times, but hey, you'll never see another dollar of mine again and I will warn others against dining there. Main meals $28.50, should be $18-$20 at the very most. Forget it, will live happily ever after without a second visit.
Very overpriced. Service was very slow and the food was quite average for what we paid. Also very noisy and found it hard to hear the people on our table.
I was looking forward to a great night out with friends and was happy that we decided to give Cocina a try. I grew up in Southern California and have enjoyed Mexican food all my life, growing up only a couple of hours from the Mexican border.
None of the 7 others I was with had had Mexican food, and did not know what to expect. I personally had expectations, btu thought it was disgusting and do not recommend it, and will certainly not be going back. The food had little or no resemblance to what I was used to. I could not believe when they brought out garlic bread with salsa !! Do yourself a favour. Don't Bother.
I took my mother here for her birthday. Yes it was a bit loud, but that only added to the atmosphere. A big thank you to Tim, he was an excellent waiter and made the evening enjoyable and one to remember. We will definitely be back!
This has been a regular place of mine for many years, and over that time it has changed in quality regularly. The food, while quite highly priced, always pleases myself and my friends whenever we attend. Some of the servings are absolutely massive and we're usually quite content to split one meal between two people. The atmosphere is very lively and is full of the alternative social life that Newtown has to offer. It may not be the best place for a romantic date or business dinner, but as a regular spot for friends wanting a good dinner before heading to one of the local bars, it is fantastic.
Definite pros to the place are: The wonderful free chilli shots that come before your meal, which anyone who enjoys spicy food will love (and if you don't like spicy food, why are you going to mexican?). The fantastic dish called "Vegetariano" which will easily cater for two and is a unique and amazing meal. And their margaritas are second to none and fantastic value, I still maintain that nowhere in Sydney can mix a margarita like they can here. The atmosphere is amazingly friendly.
Cons: If you're looking for somewhere quiet, this isn't the place. It is very lively and loud, often catering to large groups of friends. Some meals are worth their price and some are not, so its a matter of being a regular and knowing which ones to pick. Service isn't always perfect, but is never rude. Its a very casual place.
Truly one of the most overpriced places in Newtown. When I saw the menu, $28 for all main meals and for 4 measly fajitas! I almost flipped, sadly my mates wanted to stay and give it a 'try'. Needless to say, no one was impressed with the poor quality of the food (and overcharging). The 4 fajitas could have come from some supermarket pack, 1/2 a chicken breast, burnt, was poor, there was nothing mexican about this.
There was no flavour, no spices, just some diced tomato and lettuce and capsicum. How they can call this mexican is beyond belief? You could have made this at home for less than $8, instead of the 4 times the price that they charged.
I wish I had followed my adviced and walked out earlier. No way would I recommend this place to anyone. It was loud, crowded (why anyone would bother?) and downright rude staff. Suggestion to others, a big miss! It reminds me to write a letter to this restaurant, ala Ramsey and give them a piece of my mind.
Recently coming back from a trip to Mexico & the States, I was craving Mexican food so we decided to try Newton's Cocina. Place seemed busy when we arrived, we were seated straight away and given a complimentary round of non-alcoholic fruit & chilli shooters. Nice if you can handle the chilli - it was very hot. We almost died when they brought out the menus and saw each main was $28.50 ! 5 slices of garlic bread for $9.00.
We shared 3 mains between 5 people after the waitress (who was very friendly) assured us that the servings were huge. They were not. $150 later for 3 mains, garlic bread and a round of drinks were too expensive for food that was very standard and lacked of Mexican flavour.
We grabbed a take out menu on the way out (just in case) and noticed that the mains are $21.00 if you're taking away. So it's a $7.50 table charge for each main... was not impressed. Will be looking for a different Mexican spot to curb my cravings next time.
