This has been a regular place of mine for many years, and over that time it has changed in quality regularly. The food, while quite highly priced, always pleases myself and my friends whenever we attend. Some of the servings are absolutely massive and we're usually quite content to split one meal between two people. The atmosphere is very lively and is full of the alternative social life that Newtown has to offer. It may not be the best place for a romantic date or business dinner, but as a regular spot for friends wanting a good dinner before heading to one of the local bars, it is fantastic.
Definite pros to the place are: The wonderful free chilli shots that come before your meal, which anyone who enjoys spicy food will love (and if you don't like spicy food, why are you going to mexican?). The fantastic dish called "Vegetariano" which will easily cater for two and is a unique and amazing meal. And their margaritas are second to none and fantastic value, I still maintain that nowhere in Sydney can mix a margarita like they can here. The atmosphere is amazingly friendly.
Cons: If you're looking for somewhere quiet, this isn't the place. It is very lively and loud, often catering to large groups of friends. Some meals are worth their price and some are not, so its a matter of being a regular and knowing which ones to pick. Service isn't always perfect, but is never rude. Its a very casual place.
Truly one of the most overpriced places in Newtown. When I saw the menu, $28 for all main meals and for 4 measly fajitas! I almost flipped, sadly my mates wanted to stay and give it a 'try'. Needless to say, no one was impressed with the poor quality of the food (and overcharging). The 4 fajitas could have come from some supermarket pack, 1/2 a chicken breast, burnt, was poor, there was nothing mexican about this.
There was no flavour, no spices, just some diced tomato and lettuce and capsicum. How they can call this mexican is beyond belief? You could have made this at home for less than $8, instead of the 4 times the price that they charged.
I wish I had followed my adviced and walked out earlier. No way would I recommend this place to anyone. It was loud, crowded (why anyone would bother?) and downright rude staff. Suggestion to others, a big miss! It reminds me to write a letter to this restaurant, ala Ramsey and give them a piece of my mind.
Recently coming back from a trip to Mexico & the States, I was craving Mexican food so we decided to try Newton's Cocina. Place seemed busy when we arrived, we were seated straight away and given a complimentary round of non-alcoholic fruit & chilli shooters. Nice if you can handle the chilli - it was very hot. We almost died when they brought out the menus and saw each main was $28.50 ! 5 slices of garlic bread for $9.00.
We shared 3 mains between 5 people after the waitress (who was very friendly) assured us that the servings were huge. They were not. $150 later for 3 mains, garlic bread and a round of drinks were too expensive for food that was very standard and lacked of Mexican flavour.
We grabbed a take out menu on the way out (just in case) and noticed that the mains are $21.00 if you're taking away. So it's a $7.50 table charge for each main... was not impressed. Will be looking for a different Mexican spot to curb my cravings next time.
We usually go to our local mexican restaurant in Mortdale. We thought we would try something different and was totally disappointed. The food was ridiculously expensive, $28.50 for a main meal which was very average. The Nachos for entree $16.50 was extremely small and was something I could have done at home. If you want a good mexican meal I would not reccommend here.
I can understand Newtons Cocina's elevated prices given its location on the southern part of King St, and the fact that it offers more interesting food (ie. not Thai!) That said, I still think $28.50 for a main is pretty pricey. Were it not for the entertainment vouchers (25% off), we would probably opt for Thai.
We dropped into Newtons Cocina on a Thursday night, about 7:30pm when it was less than half full. By the time we left (8:30pm) the place was definitely buzzing, with a constant stream of people in through the door. It seems to be a fairly popular place for locals.
Upon arrival, we were served a complimentary shot of chilli fruit juice - way too spicy for me! I had a craving for nachos but was reluctant to order $28.50 worth of nachos so I went for the entree-sized nachos ($16.50) while my husband had the chicken fajitas, which came on a sizzling plate with 4 wheat tortillas. The food was indeed delicious although pricey. While the Entertainment voucher certainly helped, I don't know how they can justify charging $28.50 for a "grande" nachos, when many food court eateries or cafes will charge half this price! There are many other worthwhile mains you can choose from, though.
Service is great, perhaps a little understaffed as more and more hungry hordes came through the door. Seems like a great place to take a group of friends.
I love this place. Albeit a little pricey the portions are very large! It is lovely fresh Mexican food with limes and salads. Very tasty and the service is very friendly. I recommend it.
Would have to agree it is a little overpriced - I went with entertainment voucher which made it tolerable. I found the service prompt and attentive, and it was packed when we went on a Fri night. $100 fed two of us with bottle of wine and a magarita each, but that was with the voucher.
Beef burrito was extremely delicious, very good, but only 1 and chicken fajitas were good, but not spectacular. Will definitely go back but only with vouchers. The prices indicated here must be old.
We had a 6.30pm booking on a Saturday night for my brother’s birthday and arrived in time for happy hour, this was a great start to the night as most of the drinks on the menu were discounted. The Mango Margarita’s were my personal favourite. We were seated promptly and greeted with a smile by a nice blonde girl.
Drinks came quickly as did the meals; this was great and made the night flow nicely. The portion sizes were extraordinary. I couldn't believe how huge these meals were. They looked amazing and tasted like heaven. We were very happy with the experience and will definitely be returning to Newton's Cocina. Can I just say, reading some of the previous reviews, yes I agree it was an expensive dinner, but for the amount of food you receive and the quality of it, it was worth every penny!!!
