Great dumplings bursting with soup. The salted egg yolk crab is full of salty goodness. Not easy parking and the ambience is typical cheap chinese restaurant. The plastic cups for the water smelled funny so I tried to stick to the tea. Go there for the good food and prices, just don't expect too much for the rest.
Best xiao long bao restaurant in Sydney, and really cheap. 8 for $6.8 is very cheap and good volume. The skis is really soft and absorbing the juicy pork soup. It is really hot but really yummy, pork is very juicy. Xiao long bao is really good but the best is pan fired ziao long bao. It is actually massive and huge volume, you can't stop and easily to eat all for 2 ppl with other dishes.
I can't forget that taste, lots of soup inside same as xiao long bao but also mixed of texture is brilliant coz its fried on the pan. This is my favourite! Service is good, this is cheap restaurant so you can not expect good service but the waitress looking after us was so cute. She was like a Chinese doll and very friendly to us.
Not only xiao long bao, other dishes was quite good.
I don’t really like Chinese food but this is my favourite Chinese restaurant, I definitely return soon!
One of the best xiao long bao in Sydney, and very cheap at $6.80 for 8 pieces. Translucent skins with juicy pork fillings. Yum! Also, their Pan Fried Pork Buns and their Fried Noodles are so delicious!
This restaurant has a huge glass window where you can see the lady is pleating the xiao long bao perfectly, and this restaurant just looks very clean. Service was ok and value was great, very cheap! You can walk out from the restaurant with a full stomach for less than $12/head!
I always make an effort to come here whenever I have a dumpling craving, as I believe this to be the best place in Sydney for dumplings. Make sure to come here early as you will have to wait as this establishment does become very busy. Don't expect a quiet dinner as there is a lot of hustle and bustle whenever a table looks like it has finished it's last dish. The waitress will make an effort to get you outta there as people will be waiting for seats. All in all, Sydney's best dumpling restaurant.
Another one of our favourite cheap eats. This place does xiao long bao to rival din tai fung at a fraction of the price. They also do a mean crispy chicken rice. Wife goes for the vegetarian dumplings and fried dough fritter ("yu tiao") with egg and loves them. It's not one of those places to accept bookings and there are always lunch time queues. Worth the wait though. We also love that we can see the staff making the dumplings. Service is reasonable considering how busy they are.
The food at this restaurant is out of this world. We ordered pork and veggie dumplings for starters. As you pass by the kitchen you can see they are being made on the spot. They were really fresh and tasty. We had a whole barramundi, salted crab, duck and fried tofu for mains.
Although all the dishes looked and tasted amazing, the duck was my favourite and I would highly recommend it. Watch out for the portion size though, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs! Yes, there are plastic chairs and the ambience is not “romantic”, but the great food, authenticity, and quick delivery are what make this place a must visit.
I first tried this place in back 2007 as I was hankering to try out those yummy shanghai dumplings. I have always noticed the one next door was busy, however, it looked old and crowded, plus I had a pram, it would be pressed to find pram spot, so it was the off next door to New Shanghai that was going to be my first foray into these dumpling delights.
Ever since then, I have often come here with my 3 kids, family and friends for the occasional Chinese and Dumplings fare, it is local for us, consistent standard of taste and value for money.
They will never be 5 star when it comes to service, nor 3 star even, they are renowned for that kind of service, most of them eat in an all hustle and bustle environment. Food is focus not service so no matter how much you gripe about the lack of service with these joints, it has been like this and always will be like this unless you want to go posh Chinese and even then you won't be guaranteed good service.
Another thing, IMO they are one of the cleaner of chinese eateries of this budget, and I have seen some shocking ones, seeing that you pass an open view of the kitchen when you go to use the restrooms, it's all there for you to see so really can't hide much so it has to make them more accountable and meet certain food safety standards more so.
Our stable order and faves are the handmade shanghai noodles with pork, steam shanghai pork and crab buns (the one with a little soup/sauce from the meat steamed inside those delicate thin casings), panfried pork and coriander dumplings, and the peking pork spare ribs.
And they are open from morning all the way til night, so for an early dinner with the kids it's 5.30 pm and no need to worry about the boisterous nature of kids fed and satisfied we're home by 6.30 - 7 pm. Cheers
The food here is amazing, really authentic and tasty. However, the interior requires a lot of attention but its not about the ambience. If you are after some great food in Ashfield and don't mind the plastic seating then check this place out.
Food was quite salty and I thought over priced, esp the dumplings, the waitresses seemed friendly at the start but they seemed way too busy with each other than the customers, they were laughing and shouting which seemed to be louder than anything or anyone else. It was not the greatest experience I had, won't be coming back.
