This place is great value for money in comparison to the surrounding cafes/oyster bar in the food court. The dumplings (pan fried and steamed) are really fresh and delicious but my favourite dishes would have to be the crispy roast chicken with ginger/shallots and the pork belly.
Service is very mediocre, the staff barely speak english and the food comes out either really quickly or not at all. The ambience is also questionable. The chairs are hardly off the floor and everyone is so crowded together (just like a foodcourt in asia).
Love this place. The dumplings are so delicious! I particularly loved the pork that was marinated over night in sweet soya sauce! The only thing that fails this place is the service. Some of the staff cannot understand english much, which is frustrating at times.
I've been waiting to review this place. The ambience is good. The dumplings are really nice. But I had a couple of bad expriences. Once they took and served our order and didn't tell us there was no rice. What kind of chinese restaurant runs out of rice? What kind of restaurant pretends they have something they don't have and then ignores you when you repeatedly ask for it. What kind of restaurant doesn't let you buy rice to bring in from around the corner to eat with your rice accompaniments.
That's the New Shanghai. Another time I came back (for the dumplings) and the rice tasted stale or off. I figure New Shanghai can't cook rice. Service is disappointing.
Being an avid foodie, I was thinking that this place is not going to be authentic, but it was and it's better than Ding Tai Fung too! It's dumplings are great and the pan fried buns are delicious and great value! It's drunken chicken with cold noodles are yummy! Good value for Chatwood prices, cheaper than the food courts outside. Will definitely be back!
Very good value for such great food. Steamed Xiao Long Bao (with sweet vinegar not soy sauce), and sweet braised pork are a must. The queue can get abit too long sometimes! The staff could do with more training as some are a bit sleepy, the service is inconsistent, but this is 5x better compared to their other Chatswood store, bad ambience and worse service.
There are two New Shanghai Restaurants in Chatswood so you might also want to check out the other restaurant's entry as some of those reviews are for the Chatswood Chase restaurant.
Wonderful dumplings and soup noodles. Usually get the pan fried ones and the steamed ones. You can even watch them make the dumplings through the window (similar to the one in Ashfield). I find it excellent value, especially for the amount of food. Usually pay $12-15 per person depending on what we order. The Chase one has classier decor but can get quite crowded when at maximum capacity.
The service is also a bit so so and the wait staff do rush around a lot so it can be hard to get their attention. Been back several times and will definitely come back again.
The staff are awful and always seem angry. My 2 year old boy broke a bowl and they did not replace it, can't understand how they expected him to continue eating? So I asked if they had a plastic bowl and was given a take away container. When paying the bill, they had charged me both for the broken bowl and plastic take away container. How cheap is this? Also when dining early and there are only a few customers they refuse to turn on the AC. Never going back again. The staff need to take some lessons in smiling.
