My brother and I dined here on a Saturday evening early last month. The place was buzzing on our arrival. Luckily we had booked.
We ordered their 11 courses for $50.00 from their menu in the downstairs Public Bar. This is their Chefs Selection Feasting Menu which includes (shared) Entrees, (choice) of Main, (shared) Puddings.
While everything looked terrific on presentation,, every course tasted quite salty that evening, from the very first course to the last. I was especially "put off" by the saltiness of their dates, not that I really enjoyed eating dates.
The service staff were very good and efficient. We may have to try their upstair dining room menu next time.

Pretty poor to be honest, I was expecting much more having dined here previously, a bowl of baked beans and a fried egg, well cooked, but nothing more to it, incredibly disappointing! A tip, don't order the pork belly and beans, there is no pork, just beans!

Never went to Balzac but thought our experience at Montpellier was first class. The staff are the nicest people you will ever meet. The food is top quality with an amazing selection. The building is a beautiful sandstone structure. We recommend this place to anyone!

We went to The Montpellier Public House (previously known as Balzac) using a voucher. The $69 deal included a 11-dish feasting menu, a bottle of sparkling wine and coffee/tea.
The following dishes were served. They are small plates to share and essentially it is one piece/mouthful per person for each of these items served on a wooden platter.
Prawns, mayo and lemon. Snails, oxtail and parsley. Pickled beets, goats curd, orange and walnuts. Baked beans with pork belly. Potted river trout with pickled cucumbers and dill. Seasonal terrine.
Followed by one main dish each, we made the biggest mistake by ordering two servings of the Pork Belly. The skin was not crispy by standard and the pork belly was literally 98% fat. I struggled to see any pork in between the fatty layers. We should have complained and I am sure that they would have agreed to exchange it for another dish but we decided not to make a fuss as we have been to the Restaurant before where we enjoyed the experience including food and service previously.
Therefore, this may just be a one-time bad experience. Unfortunately, we had to waste the main as it was overly fatty and was inedible. The shared dessert platter was divine.
The only let down was that we had to follow up with our tea/coffee after the dessert was served and finished.
Overall, it is still a nice restaurant but the main was a total let down though.

This is just what Randwick needs, a restaurant with good food. While I did dine at Balzac in the old days, I was pretty excited for a more casual dining experience. I've been to the ground floor public bar about 5 times now, and have been to the more upscale first floor restaurant once. The ground floor restaurant has a selection of small sharing plates that include some interesting ones such as black pudding, wild boar, and escargot. The pickled beets and goats curd salad is fresh, light, and tasty. The wine selection is pretty good, but the beer selection is limited. It would be nice if they had some regularly changing specials as I've already had everything at least twice. The upstairs restaurant has a slightly different menu which includes the pig's head (for two to share). Unfortunately the night we went, they had run out. However, we did try the beef, lamb, and even whole chicken (all dishes are meant for 2 people to share). While I was sceptical (I'm not much of a roast fan), the dishes were all quite nice. This is just what Randwick needs.

We came here with a voucher and for the price paid, this was very good value. We received a great mixed entree to start with a number of strange elements that I really enjoyed, snails, pig ears and the lambs brains were particularly nice (once you get over the thoughts in your head!).
We then had a choice of mains, which were average enough. We ordered one whole ocean jacket and 1 pork and sweetbread stew. Neither were memorable.
For dessert we had another mix, with panna cotta, eton mess, bread and butter pudding, and some chocolate thing. All were tasty, and nice versions of old favourites.
Service was not great, the waitress recommended a beer that was $12 and when the bill came turned out to be $17, and she was also quite slow to refill glasses. She was new, and that also explains why she knew very little about the menu. I hope the other staff are better trained.
Overall, the building is beautiful, and the pubby atmosphere is nice. Would not rush back, but wouldn't complain if I had to go again either. Watch out for the pricey beer selection.

Service was fabulous but, unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the food. 3 friends and I ate downstairs. We had between us, the 8 hr lamb, beef, fish and chips and market fish. My fish was replaced with Skate because they sold the last fish of the day. My stringy, dry skate arrived with iceberg lettuce a single mussel on top of the undressed lettuce. It felt like rations and rather cheap.
Comments from the rest of the table regarding their meal choices were not favourable as well. Its a shame because the service really is attentive and friendly and the wine and beer selection are good. They just need to spunk up their meals a little and marry them up with how they are written on the menu.
Unfortunately, as it currently is I will not be making the trek to Randwick and Monpellier again. It is not an environment where you can casually go for a drink without food so lets hope the food improves so people will return and spread the word.

Wow this was rather disappointing. We went on a monday, on a whim and got a table immediately. But when we tried to move the table to enable my partner to sit down, we were immediately barked at by a waitress "you can't move the table". Well how are we supposed to get into our seats. I was tempted to leave there and then. Table nazi was nowhere to be seen for the entire evening.
We had the crackling and witlof which was ok, the blood pudding, which was ok, the york puds which was ok, corned beef which was ok and lamb which was ok. With an overall ok rating, I wasn't expecting much with the dessert. But the bread and butter pudding really did excel.
Would i return......no. Maybe for supper when no one else is open. Maybe.

We were Balzac regulars and apart from some slow service on particularly busy Saturday nights always loved the food and dining experience. Been three times Since re-opening as Montpelier. Last weekend dining downstairs the experience was unsatisfactory.
We ordered one entree which arrived fairly quickly and once finished then had to wait for over an hour and fifteen for the mains. 2 identical mains that finally arrived were both cold and with one missing an integral ingredient. Waiters not attentive and had to wave them down in order to replenish our glasses. Not sure if we'll go back. Disappointed.
