I visited Montien Tong randomly one day for a lunch special when it wasn't busy, and it was delicious. I was really happy because it was a decent priced thai restaurant in cronulla that was well worth the value (unlike others). My boyfriend and I ordered take away from there twice, and it was still pretty good, although they kept forgetting to put the nuts in my chicken pad thai.
When we finally dined in on a saturday night, it was terrible! even though I booked a table several days in advance we got stuck in the corridor and were constantly being knocked by waiters/waitresses and customers. The food was still pretty nice, although my chicken pad thai was more like, just noodles, there were 3 pieces of chicken, you could tell they had been rushed.
By the time I flagged down the waitress to ask for the nuts, she said they were "already in there" and when I said no sorry they're not, she rolled her eyes and went of in a huff!! The food is nice, and I'm sure the service is a bit better when they're not busy. But it was so loud, we couldn't even talk to each other, this was because we were in the corridor next to a very obnoxious table of 4 who had clearly had too much red wine, and felt the need to clap and shout whenever a dish was delivered to them.
If you are eating at Montien Tong, when you book a table, request one outside, or in the back room, that way hopefully, the noise won't be such a huge problem!
My family and I are big fans of Thai food, as I travel to Thailand on business frequently. I am fortunate enough to sample Thai food from the different regions of Thailand, not to mention all over Sydney. We live in North Sydney, and often make the trek to Montien Tong at Cronulla, as the service and food has to be in the top 10 best Thai Restaurant in Sydney.
We are locals and love to go to Montien for the Movie Deal. We get the tasty green curry chicken and the Montien chicken plus 2 Movie tickets for $40. It's great value and the belly is totally satisfied. Compliments to the male Thai waiter who treated us like royalty. I forgot what great service feels like.
My wife and I had our daughter's 18th birthday in the upstairs function room. We had 51 guests and everyone enjoyed the food, the service was very good and the room very private with a nice outdoor patio area. Highly recommend it.
Was really disappointed with the quality of the food. The chicken was tough (obviously been frozen, and then overcooked). We advised the staff of the problem, and they told us it was Ok. Well sorry, but there are many better palces in the Shire.
We went here midweek with a group of about twenty. We were in the upstairs room on the left which goes out onto a lovely outdoor area. The food was okay but having been to Thailand myself, it was less than authentic. My main concern was the fact that my friend had a hair in her entree, my husband found a long black hair in his boiled rice, and I had a long white piece of plastic in mine. It really turned us off and made us question the hygiene standards of the place. We will not go back for this very reason.
Went to Montien Tong this past Saturday night with 2 friends. We shared 5 entrees and had a main each. The food came out quicker than I have ever had at any restaurant in the past, it was sensational.
It cost us about $35 a head (including tip and drinks). There were many other people there and all seemed to enjoy themselves, the service was excellent. Can't say a bad thing about the place, a must to go to...
