My first time here and I was surprised how small this place is but it was quite busy. It is a very casual place where it might suit large families or kids parties. Its quite noisy but not unpleasant. The food was bland and stodgy and not very reminiscent of real mexican food.
I have the Montezuma special and got a plate of raw coleslaw/veggies topped with tomato sauce and sour cream on too. Tasted OK but not good value for $15.95. I personally wouldn't go there again but there is a place for this type of casual, cheap family eatery situated on the Manly beachfront.
If Tex-Mex exists then why not Oz-Mex? If you are some sort of gastro-zealot who for example, compares a French dining experience in Australia to some long-since-digested Parisian 5-star Michelin quaff, then clearly, Montezuma's is not for you. That being said, scant indeed are the venues that can replicate the SoCal / Tex-Mex taste outside of the USofA. I would argue that this is not true Mexican food, but something else, legitimised because it's loudly American.
Montezuma's is its' own thing. It is a happy place where I've celebrated my birthday and had a fun time. The view is great. The service friendly and a big thank you to Jane who is a great hostess. The food is tasty and the sangria divine. It's one of the few places left in Manly that isn't up itself in that eastern suburbs way.
Three of us went here, and altho I do think Mexican food in Aus is generally very bad this was the worst. We had different food and it all tasted exactly the same: like stodge, bland, tasteless, absolutely awful. When they came to pick up our half finished meals all the waitress said when I told them it wasn't very good was that we should have told her earlier and there was nothing she could do now. Atrocious, don't go here.
My boyfriend and I come to Montezuma's regularly when we want a quick and easy meal that will fill us up but won't break the bank. The service is always exceptional with a choice of sitting indoors or out on the balcony with a view of Manly beach.
I lived in Texas for a year so compared to there, yeah, the food sucks but as a stand alone I'd rate the food above average around these parts. The place seems to be kid friendly for those of you with little 'uns. But do us childless people a favour and keep your kids at the table - the plates come out hot and the last thing a waiter needs is to watch out for someone’s little darling exploring their inner space (or whatever the do gooders are calling it these days).
Well after when I read it about the food, I did not order big meal but thanks God that I didn't because most of my friends did not like it at all. It was really so fatty and the rice was very old.
My taco was good with some vegetables and some cheese wasn't too bad, but my sauce it was not a real salsa sauce. Oh well I still miss the lovely American Mexican food. I am here 3 and half years, but I didn't have a lovely Mexican food like in USA. I miss it! I will not go back to this place sorry!
I honestly can't comprehend the bad reviews! I actually love it ! It's like my little restaurant that me and my partner have found and now go to whenever we can.
Great discover, I thought it was fanstic, I love getting my moneys worth when it comes to food, great sized portions, decor a bit tacky but it makes it feel a bit more Mexican. Always always popular when I go there.
Overall, maybe a slightly long wait, but given its popularity to be expected, great delicious food in big portions and great value.
Been going to this place a few years now. Service is great, owners really friendly. Always good atmosphere, lots of noise. Great view over the beach.
Food could do with a bit more spice sometimes - just ask for it! Sangria is super good, strong and fruity. Everyone should get over the fact you have to walk to the bar, no big deal and means you get your drinks immediately. Love this place!
Terrible, yucky, boring food. I'm a crazy Californian living in Sydney. I guess I'm spoiled on the great Mexican available back home in "North Mexico". This place was so bad that I swore to my girlfriend that we cannot have any more Mexican in Sydney for the next year. Doesn't anyone put any spice in their Aussie Mexican?
I think Montezumas Manly has the best Mexican in Sydney. The restaurant has a fun theme, some refer to that as 'tacky'. I love the kooky decor like the hanging parrots and bright walls. The sangria is delicious, is good value and packs a punch. The staff are particularly friendly. We have been dining at Montezumas for some time now and I find it nothing short of fantastic! Looking forward to my next San Diego! It's not swanky but then again who goes to a Mexican restaurant thinking it will be.
