Duck rice paper rolls were wonderful, very disappointed with the boneless crispy duck with ginger sauce though, it reminded us of KFC but without the spices. Had a beef stir fry where the meat had seemed to be boiled and was very tasteless, and the oyster-based sauce very very watery.
Not great, but would still be tempted to go back and try to find better mains on the menu solely because the duck rice paper rolls were so very good.
Another neighbourhood favourite. This place hides its light under a bushel. If you've only been once you'll think the food is good and the service efficient. If you go back, and back, as we now do you'll know yes, the food is reliably good; it arrives invisably at your table and before you know it, your BYO Merlot is winding its way down.
Early in the week (ssshhh) parking's easy out the front. A cheap, good eat. Let them know if you have food allergies like garlic, onion or whatever and they'll magically not be on your plate. All food freshly cooked in woks and hotplates out the back. Kind on the wallet and yum, add good company and you'll have a fun, casual night.
Value for money food isn't easy to come by in Balmain. Miss Saigon has well priced entrees and standard priced mains. That said, all the food was very fresh and delicious. Service was quick and attentive, if not overly bubbly! We had the roast duck rolls and prawn dumplings for entree, and the seafood Miss Saigon curry for main between 2 of us. Fresh prawn crackers. Overall, pretty impressed.
A good reliable cheap and cheerful local Vietnamese. Working off the specials board, there are some tasty and plentiful dishes, along with friendly attentive service. Every suburb wants a Miss Saigon.
Based on some of the recent glowing Eatability reviews I had high hopes for Miss Saigon but sadly as occasionally is the case they proved inaccurate, at least from my perspective. I'd be less critical but for the $20 to $25 prices asked for mains you'd pay $12 to $15 for elsewhere if quality of the food and surroundings were taken into account. This place was dirty and scruffy and more typical of lower-order Asian takeout joints. A $22 main invitingly described as something like succulent prime pork ribs in a chillie and black bean sauce was in fact a preposterous pile of almost meat free 2cm cut pork bones swimming in an oily gruel.
To be fair to Miss Saigon the prawn dumpling, short soup and stuffed chicken wing entrees were well made and not too expensive but the seafood soup main course at about $23 and the afore mentioned pork dish were well below average in my view. I doubt this joint could survive outside the Beaujolais Bolshevik precinct of Balmain as no-one looking for fair value would give it a sideways glance.
Fantastic food, so FRESH. Ambience is great if you are looking for a non pretentious and colourful location. Service is fast and good value. I will become a regular.
My husband and I absolutely love this restaurant. We go every Sunday night and almost always have the same dishes. As boring as that might sound we, continously walk out saying the same thing "it's so fresh!". A must is the duck rice paper rolls, prawns in abalone sauce and chilli chicken with bamboo shoots. Another favourite is the green paw paw salad (prawn and chicken). In winter, try the seafood steamboat. In terms of value we think it's pretty good - BYO is always a winner and we always get service with a smile.
