The chef's are 1st class. Norton Street has dropped off in the past 5 years or so with quality going down the drain. Many have come and gone and many are holding on by the skin of their teeth. If you serve poor food, you won't last long!
Mezzapica in one way or another have been on Norton St for 52 years! Most of those years being the same family running it! The Mezzapica Cafe is an offspring of the Iconic Cake Shop Next door.
The Gelato is made in house and not brought in. The Pasta is absolutely brilliant and for mains at around $15-20 for lunch, that is cheep. What tops off a great meal is the coffee. Which happens to be brilliant. Try a Macchiato.
Service by the 2 good looking owners and their staff is impeccable. They accommodate kids with strollers. It will get tight in there but they don't seem to care!
Very happy and up beat atmosphere.
Highly recommended.
Came in for some cakes, the waiter was more interested in talking to a girl at the counter than getting what we ordered for us. The brioche was awful, as though they'd forgotten to put the sugar in... Nice atmosphere, busy and inviting.
I went and tried them again as I heard they were taken over by some local boys, and they are fantastic. The pasta doesn't have that processed taste that seems to be taking over Norton St, however great cake selection and great coffee. This place was once an institution and will return as one. Italian run place as I know it....very important.
The menu is quite limited but the food is very good value for money - around $10 for pasta. Service is generally responsive but I have not been there when it is busy. There is better pasta to be had elsewhere on Norton St but not at these prices.
Have been here a few times with friends and family. Food is pretty standard cafe Italian although good value at under $10 for a good-sized bowl of pasta. Is a bit cramped and on busy weekends is impossible to patrons and staff alike to move around the place, which might explain the incredibly slow service whenever there are more than a dozen customers. Still, it's realistically priced, friendly and the gelato is awesome.
The biscuit store that they have next door is sensational and they would get a ten out of ten but the restaurant is a typical run of the mill kinda italian restaurant with all the gelato and the pasta and the coffee. Reasonably priced though and the service is good.
We went to Mezzapica for a follow up visit. The first time around, food was not very tasty but after enquiring about the kitchen, found that they had changed chefs & must say the food is flavoursome. Great value & must say I didn't have a problem with the service.
I love this place, I live on Norton st and used to try a new place every week but have found the value for $ at mezzapica to be the best on the street.
