This is a rare encounter in Australia. Who still cooks traditional, rich, French food like the French owners of Mere Catherine? Not many, even in France. We have to be grateful for the experience. It is not the kind of place where I'll eat regularly but once in a while, it is a delight. The onion soup is as traditional as it gets with a beaten raw egg and a shot of port. Same can be said of the garlic butter snails served in their shells. Shame that the bread isn't quite the real baguette and isn't complementary. As a main, I love the quails with raisins and my partner is a fan of the crispy duck a l'orange. If you aren't full by dessert time than I suggest you try the profiteroles. I recommend you bring your own wine as the offering is very limited. Bookings required.

I also think it is fantastic food and also expensive. I think people expect lower prices as the restaurant is very very simple and not at all flash. But I suspect that if food of that quality was served in a more palacious setting, it would not occur to them to say its expensive. Should they charge less? Maybe but, with such limited seating, it would be difficult to stay in business I would think. I will be going back (but will bring my own plonk!)

Good food-only complaint was the French Onion Soup was far too salty for our palate-we had been warned about this but felt too rude to say anything when we ordered. Despite the excessive saltiness we still enjoyed trying it once. The Chateaubriand was superb. So tender. If we do return to Mere Catherine-next time we would start with main course and have a desert and bypass entree, which neighbouring tables were doing. We really enjoyed the experience.

In a World where everything is the latest fad, it's comforting to know some things just don't change.
We've been eating at Mere Catherine for over 15 years, from a time when they were in the premises now occupied by Jimmy Liks and just love it. We don't go often, maybe once a year, but look forward to it when we do. Have the onion soup and chateau briand, and be transported to France! And sure I've been a bit generous with the scores, but as a 'package experience' this place is just magic.

The food was good but very much on the pricey side for this tiny rustic, unassuming restaurant. I must admit I was expecting something more from the menu; a wow dish I suppose. The service was excellent.

Oh what a find! Had a beautiful dinner at Mere Catherine, felt like I could have been in Paris. The French Onion soup was amazing, I'm still thinking about it! The side dishes were great as well. I loved the small intimate restaurant and the lovely lady who served us, can't wait to go back.

I'm rarely inspired to seek out a website where I can leave a review, but after *dining* here on a piece of battered perch for $41.90 that my local chippie could have made better, I am compelled to let you know of what a bad place this is. Not to mention outrageously overpriced. $7.90 for 330ml Perrier and $3 for 4 thin pieces of stale bagette? Who are you try hards giving this place a good review. Agreed, it goes hard on the cute factor, but seriously, this place has seen better days... like a decade or two ago.

I have walked past this unassuming little french restaurant my entire life, until a friend took me there last night. I have never felt compelled to write a review for anything before, but this restaurant is an absolute treat. The food is simply exquisite and truly authentic and the service is the finest I have experienced at any restaurant in the Australia, attentive, friendly but not at all overbearing.

A very small restaurant with great food and ambiance, however, don't get caught out the way we did - if someone cancels they charge you $40 for that person whether they order a main or not. Between 3 of us it cost $100 each so be prepared to part with your well earned cash.

The best little place in all of Sydney. I love the ambience almost as much as the french onion soup! prices so reasonable and service is great. Not a bad word except always walk out a little too full.
