The food and the ambient are quite alright but the service is substandard. I complained there was a bug on my water, the waitress took the glass and came back with the same water just without the little spider floating on it. Disgusting!
Food is good here, good quality Japanese food, but it comes at a price! Plenty of japanese places in the city with comparable quality at much more affordable prices.
One thing Masuya does not excel at is service. I arrived 10 minutes earlier than my booking and was not given a table, despite the many tables that were free which could fit us. The reason they gave was that the table they had assigned for us was still being used. So we were forced to wait 20 minutes while other diners who came in after us got seated straight away. I can't believe such an easy change could not be accommodated, were they this incompetent?
Not happy at all with the service on that day and ruined the whole dinner service for me.
The sashimi was a bit of a let down, although fresh, as some were stringy and the lobster sashimi wasn't cut properly.
The head waitor, a young chap was rather arrogant when asked questions about the food (as it seems like he's the only one who can asnwer questions in English. We tried asking others, but couple of times we went there, he always comes out to answer the questions. He must be sick of other waiters asking him to answer, but still, if they hire waiters who can't explain properly, that shouldn't be the attitude he should have).
Mocktail is nice, we enjoy the kiwi one the most, but 3 times we ordered, the amount and preparation of kiwis inside were always different. Maybe they had different drink makers each time we went there.
Ambience is nice, and service is generally good other than the head waiter of course. They do the tempura well and pork katsu is very lean, which I prefer a bit of fat in tonkatsu, but that's upto the individual taste. Although searching is on menu everytime we go there, they never seem to stock it. Even when we go there at 6 pm, we get told they don't have it or out of stock.
It's really a shame that they don't treat every customer equally. We were treated good, but it's not nice to see other tables nearby are not treated as well for whatever reasons.
Celebrated a birthday here. Originally made a booking and the lady said I could choose either the 6-8 pm or 8-10 pm. Apparently there was no flexibility! For the amount they were charging for food I thought that was appalling. Ended up booking 6-8 pm for 12 people. The ambience was alright. I've seen better at more affordable places, such as Wagaya.
On the day, we ordered the sushi mi boat and let me tell you, that was huge! The boat anyway, the food was on top and that was neat. Approx $70. In addition we ordered entrees and mains to share between us. The wagyu beef was the best! It had mashed potato on the bottom and was very delicious - highly recommend that. We had several plates of that.
The mocktails were nice, especially the strawberry one. Reasonably priced. Service was alright. Could have been better. They must be understaffed or really busy because I had to look around for them and it was very difficult to get their attention.
Ended up costing us $40 per person including drinks. Would recommend this place to my friends, especially the wagyu beef. It does cost quite a bit, but hey it was a celebration. Turns out they did not kick us out or pressure us to leave. As we left we could see people standing in a queue at the entrance waiting for their tables.
Food: Brilliant! Had the famous tonkatsu pork which lived up to its expectations. Selection of sashmi fresh of cause and the wagyu beef was superb. A litttle disappointed with the dessert. Just ordinary. Ambience: Pleasant surroundings. Spacious and quiet. Service: Extremely polite and friendly staff with a smile. Just how I like it. Value: A little expensive, but I would say worth the money.
Went there for my friend's farewell last tuesday. The food were very nice, very fresh sashimi and tasty sapporo hot pot. Good service and value. We all enjoyed our dinner.
They are trying to do some fusion menu but some of the items are just too italian for a jap restaurant! Pork Tonkotsu was very good! Wagyu beef with miso, sauce was very nice but the wagyu was tough! It took me a good 5 minutes to chew them, I think it was not cut properly so it became tough.
Dessert and coffee was not very good, but yeah I don't expect too much of these items from a Jap restaurant.. Service was excellent! Waitstaff are very professional. I don't like the seating at this place. The way the chairs are placed are very food court like.
Overall the experience was good, except they are very expensive! There are few other jap restaurant around the area that is pretty good but much cheaper than Masuya.
Pricier jap food here, but you get what you pay for. Well prepared. You must book or you won't get a seat for dinner. Expect to pay around $40 per head.
Have been here numerous times for business lunches. Food is consistently very good and the service, equally so. Mr. John's special used to be very good but has, I think, disappeared from the menu. The Tonkatsu is always excellent but I'd like to see the option of Japanese curry sauce with it. Reminds me a bit of Aykaku Kaku (?) in the City of London, which was always a great business lunch venue.
As a seafood sushi bar, the fish eggs are horrible. We ordered the sushi deluxe and couldn't believe the quality is so poor. First of all, the sushi deluxe came 2 minutes after we ordered, and I know it is not possible unless the sushis are "pre-made"! For the price of the sushi, I would expect them all freshly made. However, it isn't and was straight from the fridge! Fish eggs are melted (not even round anymore). So sushi is no go in this place.
We also ordered teriyaki chicken, it is just like normal Japanese takeaway quality, not impressed at all. Then the hotpot, looks cheap already with the cheaply made gas stove (the one you get from bargain store for $10), the noodles are ok and the soup is ok. (again, not impressive). So for the price you pay, overall it is not worth it. I will not go back for sure.
