I never had any problems at Masthai, have been there more than 10 years, not a big shot in the community. Service always great, manager is very friendly and nice. I guess it all depends on how you treat people.

We come here all the time, their udon is one of my favourites as well as their congee and spanner crabs (when they're in season). This is one of our favourite places to eat in beverly hills!

Everything is always fresh and delicious. We get great service when I go with my dad, he's kinda well known in certain parts of the Sydney Chinese community, he is very well known at Masthai and they suck up to him. But when my gweilo husband and I have turned up as the first of our party they will tell us there is no booking, they tell us to wait outside etc. As soon as my dad turns up it's a different story.

Someone else mentioned the confusing name? It used to be a Thai restaurant. Years ago, they kept the same thai decorations their predecessors had left behind and we even saw them giving the old Thai menu to a couple.

The quail is excellent. Giant oysters very lightly steamed with ginger and shallots are beutiful. The slow cooked soups are perfect. The lobsters are always fresh and delicious. We like lobster served sashimi first course followed by stir fry w handmade noodles. My dad loves their jung kong pork ribs. Their veg is always fantastic. The food is just great. Everything. I've never had a bad meal here but have overeaten every single time. Dad and I both live in Surry Hills (not together of course!) so we have Chinatown on our doorstep but we always go to Masthai for special occassions. I only go with him.

Good luck if you're going sans Chinoise!

This is my perennial favourite chinese restaurant. Ended up there recently, after walking out from the nearby restaurant that was promoting cheap crabs. This other restaurant did not honour the booking time, and after a ridiculous 30 minutes waiting and no tables in sight, learnt my lesson and came here.

The fish and lobster are always well done, and in general great value for good cantonese HK food. I have also previously tried their "after hours" eat, ie from 10 pm til ?2 am, and the congee was delicious. Surprisingly, a lot of people around this time of the night at this place. Perhaps, a well kept local secret?

Jan 2012: New Manager and summer cleanout of the previously challenging old waiting guards spells a marked lifting of the welcoming factor that should rightly accompanies the culinary skills of the Chef. Overall, best restaurant in Beverly Hills and some more. Ah, Shucks.....no need to elaborate....just come here.

I've been coming here for year. The food is great but generally a little bit pricey. The proportion of the food has become smaller as well.

The food is decent, the crab is done well. The lobster (made via the salt method) was dry, and not very appetising. The restaurant manager was not very friendly, we requested for a table away from the doorway during our booking, but when we arrived she insisted, otherwise, despite availability of seats all around.

The waiters do the restaurant some justice, very nice, yet they appear unenthusiastic about complaints.

Ate here last night for my birthday, food was great! Had quail, crab with garlic and shallot & steamed fresh fish along with other dishes. We go here quite regularly, this place is a must for good Chinese food, there isn't many good authentic Chinese restaurants around.

Everything is tops here, the crab, the quail and the fried rice is simply gorgeous. The service however is quite poor, the workers there seem to have had enough of the job which is a disappointment. I've been there quite a few times and the only that keeps me going is the food, not the people.
Someone needs to take action (through calling or mailing) because Masthai can do much more better than it already is! =]

Food is simply delicious. Ambience isn't that great, it seems quite old. Service is okay, except for a few rude people. Overall, quite a good restaurant.

Food is delicious. A definite stand out from most chinese restaurants. BBQ quail is one of the best in Sydney. Lobster is fresh but make sure you ask them to pick one under 2kg or around there as the shell may get a bit thick and hard if the lobster are too heavy and old. Sweet and sour pork spare ribs is delicious. You must try the baby abalone!
