Really, the food here is average at best but its a nice little cafe with an upstairs area and plenty of choices in terms of drinks but limited when it comes to food. I like the atmosphere here though.
I just love it here, makes me feel like I can actually relax and enjoy my time without feeling like the waiters are watching and waiting for me to free the table so that they can turn it. Parra Needs more places like this. Church St pretention has really disappointed me, if I wanted that kind of atmosphere I would have stayed in the city and not moved out here. This cafe is exactly what I want and expect from a neighbourhood cafe, reminds me of what "teascapes"in randwick used to be like before they "upgraded".
This cafe is a great casual place to chill out. The warm apple cider is a comforting tummy-filler on a cold night - same goes for the huge mugs of hot chocolate and my friend was impressed with his coffee. I've never tried the food here. The atmosphere is very laid back, you can take your time without anyone ever hassling you (you can even play boardgames), and it's open til late! One of the least pretentious places on the Church street strip, and one of the few cafes I actually enjoy visiting.
This place is really nice for a casual catch up with friends and coffee. The staff are friendly. I really like how they display artworks on the walls, very nice touch.
I love the homey feel of this place. Settled in after a show at the Riverside with a good, spicy, steamy mug of chai with a jam and coconut slice. I always mean to try the coffees here but inevitably seem to turn up too late in the night for a caffeine hit. However, I can recommend the apple ciders too (they come with cream, so if you don't want it you should say so) and I've also had massive servings of mud cake here. Definitely top of the line for desserts.
On your way upstairs you'll see a bookshelf. Mars Hill is an official bookcrossing zone. That means free books! You can pick one up to take home, or exchange and leave your own in return. (Check out www.bookcrossing.com for more details.)
Love the perennially changing art displays and also the friendliness of the staff, who weren't fazed by my friend's question "What's in the jam and coconut slice? Will I like it?" They simply responded good - humouredly "Well, if you like jam and coconut you'll like it... if not I'd stay away"!
I'm in total agreement with other reviewers here - the west needs more places like Mars Hill. A must-visit for me every time I'm in Parramatta.
Went here for a coffee tonight. They have great drinks and a huge range of coffees! I can't wait to go back to try more of their drinks. We also ended up ordering some nachos and some wedges which were all really good too. Surprisingly, we sat in a room upstairs, which appeared to be where they have live music. Was a really comfortable and relaxed atmosphere!
I agree with foodie1982 about being a place on Church St where you can simply relax and enjoy yourself. It seems that a lot of people go to Church St a little dressed up for dinner, but this place was a bit more relaxed and I really liked that. Will totally go back to try other coffee flavours!
A great place for a coffee in Parramatta. Feels more like newtown with comfy lounges, board games, live music, poetry readings etc. I wouldn't necessarily go there to eat a meal, but would definite recommend it for a coffee/dessert. You never feel you are being rushed out of this place, and its not pretentious in any way, it sounds lame, but its one of the few places on church street where you feel can really be yourself and are not 'on show'!!
Good value for what you get. Service is usually good, however, the last time I was there I had to wait a while. They expect self service. Although I must give a high note to the ambience to the place due to there being a band on selected nights playing some jazz for example. It pays to gather information to what is playing at the time you plan on going.
Nice cafe to just chill & have a good conversation. You can even play boardgames here. Played until they kicked us out ! Service is great & friendly. Nothing special, but it's a cosy place.
A nice arty cafe, do not go here if you're expecting anything flashy. Its quite simple, and as if the food, most meals are $10, and when you pay that much you can't expect a feast, however, both my boyfriend and I were happy with our meals. The chef was so lovely, I ordered the quesadellas without beans/meat and she came out to ask me that if I wasn't full on it, she would make me another without charge. You can't buy that kinda service! Their drinks menu is extensive and quite yummy. Sydney needs more places like these!
