This is the best Malaysian restaurant can get in Sydney. I came here with my husband and my friend, we waited 45 minutes in the queue from 8 pm onwards. This is my second time to the restaurant. I ordered stay chicken + beef, it was the best satay that I have tasted in Australia. It is very close to what you get in Malaysia - short of "ketupat", the rice cakes. The sauce was very authentic and the satays were marinated very well and comes in Malaysian-bite sizes. It does not like like those you get in Coles.
The fried chicken reminded me of what you get in the Pasar Malam "Night markets" in KL. It was very delicious! The sambal udang "prawns" was very fresh, hot and spicy. They do not make the taste to suit the Westerners but presented each dish close to being authentic. We had one roti each, roti was a bit of a disappointment. It was fun to watch them flapping and folding the roti but it was soft.
The roti needs to be a bit more toasted and "crunchy" on the outside and soft in the inside. There are a lot of layers in the roti but it was all very soft. However, the sauce that came with the roti were winners! They tasted better in an ordinary mamak store in KL, they are normally very watered down. These sauces, the dal sauce and the curry ikan "fish" sauce were thick, yummy and very tasty.
We also ordered the chicken curry, ooooh! It is was extremely good! I have to say that I still mesmerise of going there again, except when I thought of the line outside the restaurant it dampens my spirit! The food was extraordinary! The staff was very apologetic as we waited for a long time. I finished my dinner with a glass of teh-tarik halia "ginger" and Ice-Kacang! I was so full that I can bearly get out of the door.
I ordered take away one and half dozen satay for 6 quests via telephone and what I got when I picked up my take away is only half a dozen. Before I hang up, I heard the person who take my order, names Jasmine Lau said that one and half dozen and one maggie goreng and can pick up in about 10-15 minutes. When I called back, she gave me all sort of excuses saying that the phone line wasn't really clear and make a mistake on my order, and she keep on saying Sorry, when I told her "do you expect 6 people just have one satay each?"
Obviously, I want another dozen of satay and she keep on saying that they can't provide that until 5.30 pm because the kitchen is close. Can anyone tell me what kind of customer service is this? and what if I have 12 guests in the house, how are we going to eat only half a dozen satay? Nothing can be compensated from the service provided other than giving all sort of excuses and sorry.
I went on a Friday night and had to wait for over an hour for a table of 8, so I was pretty hungry (I would not have not chosen this venue simply based on the queue) and irritable. The seating was uncomfortably jam packed and it was very noisy. I enjoyed the chicken ayam curry, beautiful flavour and spicy without burning your mouth out. I didn't like the roti. I felt rushed. I don't understand what the fuss is about.
Great cheap place to eat. I always get there early to avoid the crowds which make it a much nicer place to eat. The fresh rotis are the best and it's interesting to watch them make them. The satay dipping sauce was great, used it on everything.
Pretty good value at Mamak. The quality of the food is not commensurate with the long queues this restaurant experiences. The food isn't bad, just isn't that great. Seating is uncomfortably close to each other as they try to squeeze maximum amount of space. Only been there once, and unlikely to return.
Went on Friday night at 5:45 pm and there was a queue already. Had to wait about 20 minutes for a 4-seater table, but it was ok because we kind of expected it. The Rotis are able $6-8. The noodle and rice dishes are $9-12 and in quite large portions. The other mains are about $10-15.
Because the restaurant is so popular, the ambience inside can be really noisy and crowded. Also, there's a sense of pressure to eat and leave, because of the lines lining up. What is great though is the cleanliness inside, the warm atmosphere and the open kitchen at the entrance of the restaurant, where you can see them making the roti.
The service is quite good, the servers are friendly etc.
Was pretty excited to go to this place as I have read reviews on other sites and whenever I drive past this place the line is always big. Waited about 20 minutes in line, got served within 5 minutes but had to wait for ages for the food. I was expecting our roti to come out first but our nasi lemak came out without our serving of meat so we were waiting for another 10 minutes just to start eating. The food was average, definitely not a place I'd be lining up for again not unless it was the last option.
This place rocks!. Almost tried everything on the menu. Lamb dish is the winner!Food is good in general but they have to do something to lift up the service!
