Conveniently located a few doors down from the pub, it doesn't look like much from the ground floor. You would be forgiven for thinking it is just a takeaway, but there are tables and service upstairs and now that I'm so over Thai (especially the ones in Kirribilli) it is exciting to have a Malaysian/Chinese place that not only is reasonably priced, but has more than acceptable food.

Initially started going there for wonton noodle soups (which are brilliant; tasty wontons and brimming with fresh seafood in that version), but have now ventured into the likes of sang choy bau, rendang with roti and fish with ginger and shallots and still like it. Everything is fresh, tasty and also huge!

The dining room is pretty basic and lacks the niceties of things like ice buckets, but the service has always been timely and most hospitable. After a few quiet weeknights there, we wondered if they were suffering from being a bit further down the regular beaten track on Broughton St, or were even still paying for the past owners reputation (after some pretty ordinary experiences in that period, we gave it a wide berth).

However, a recent Friday night showed that they are getting reasonable business; no doubt others like ourselves looking for a relaxed, cheap and cheerful, friday night unwind with friends over a couple of bottles of BYO.

Now if we could only get a vietnamese place in Kirribilli, preferably in place of one of the Thais......

It's not that flash and comprises a kitchen and counter downstairs, from which a rather brisk trade in takeaway seems to be taking place; and a rather shabby dining room upstairs. But it's worth the trip to the very tail end of the Kirribilli dining strip (it's further on past the pub in the opposite direction of all the other multitudes of eating establishments) for some good, honest Asian food.

Admittedly, we've only tried the wonton noodle soups which we consider the type of heartwarming, comfort food that too often is done poorly. Well, really enjoy it here as the wontons are fresh and tasty, and the seafood version has a generous serve of varied fresh and chunky aquatic species. There was quite a crowd there yesterday enjoying hefty serves of nice looking dishes, especially of the Malaysian variety.

Just the ticket for us when we're looking for a change from Thai (and who isn't these days???), don't feel like washing up, and don't feel like getting dressed up! Though it looks like an eat 'n' run place, you can take BYO as well and enjoy your meal a little more leisurely which we may just do after a few drinks at the Kirribilli pub one of these Friday nights.
