The laksa that I've had here has been brilliant, while a couple of the other meals have been less than average and left me wondering why did I bother. Don't worry about eating in, I think that the ambience rating is almost accurate and with brilliant views a couple of hundred metres up the street, I don't know why you would bother.
I am quite surprised with the comments made here. My partner and I, along with my sister visited Malaya House last night and found the food most appalling. The service was great, friendly staff that made sure we were well looked after but the food was awful.
Beef rendang tasted extremely mild and we thought it might be a little off and the roti we ordered were soggy unfortunately. Ordered Chow Hor Fun but it wasn't the type we were hoping for, it was dry and had 'char siew' pork in it, which surprised me. We also ordered assam chicken and it was the best dish out of all three, although again, I wouldn't step into the restaurant again.
I find the title of the restaurant misleading, they don't serve only Malaysian food, in fact they served lots of asian varieties and I think this is the reason why the food is so variable.
Aside from the place, (looks like a little old granny flat) it's cosy and it's small but let me just say the food is unbelievable. I absolutley love this place! The chef I call the boss makes me the best dish. Stirfry sweet chilli Thai chicken with basil extra chicken and with noodles not rice... oh love it!!!
The dishes are large and the service is customised to what you want. My friend Dave hate vegetables so he orders extra chicken and they give him alot of chicken. Basically it's not a place to go on a date, but it is a great place for lunch, take out or dinner if you are a local. Good if you are a couple who have been dating for a while, and you can eat in. Very inexpensive for Kirribilli. Better than most places for taste.! "Truly a lump of coal that's actually a diamond in disguised!"
Looks pretty dull. Food is excellent. We have used them for takeaway and even dined in a couple of times. The quality of the meat and veg is excellent. A real surprise.
At first glance the place looks rather worn. However, the staff and service are amazing. Being a local etc I find this place is far above many other options in the area. The food is fresh and tasty and the staff are always friendly and warm.
Malaya house is a cosy place, a place where you can relax and get out of the over hype of some Sydney eating establishments. If you want value for money and good food then go to the Malaya House. This is not a first date type place but a place you take your partner too.
I have unknowingly ignored this place for a while due to it's less than glamorous looks. But after finally venturing inside, was struck firstly, yes, by it's less than glamorous looks, but secondly and more importantly by the abundance of fresh produce everywhere. I thought the meal may turn out good, and it did. Wouldn't be my choice for a first date, but ok for cheap and cheerful authentic food.
Have eaten here a few times. I have found that their malay style foods like curries and sambals rendangs are very tasty and fresh!!! and nice and spicy! The noodles dishes, however, were slightly disappointing. But having said that if you crave your curries and like your food spicy, give their curries a try, I'm sure you'll like them!
We had a takeaway from here just recently as we fancied some malaysian style food rather than the usual fish and chips or italian that is so common around Kirribilli.
My partner and I ordered two completely different dishes and they arrived looking identical. The food style is large chopped vegetables in a rather watery type sauce, regardless of which dish you choose! Having said that, we both enjoyed the taste, and for the value its quite a reasonable takeaway.
Some notes on the place itself, there are several menus on the wall which can be confusing, actually its the lunch menus on the right, and dinner menus on the left. Also you can usually expect fast service on the takeaway, in this case we collected and it was cooked fast and still rather hot.
Conveniently located a few doors down from the pub, it doesn't look like much from the ground floor. You would be forgiven for thinking it is just a takeaway, but there are tables and service upstairs and now that I'm so over Thai (especially the ones in Kirribilli) it is exciting to have a Malaysian/Chinese place that not only is reasonably priced, but has more than acceptable food.
Initially started going there for wonton noodle soups (which are brilliant; tasty wontons and brimming with fresh seafood in that version), but have now ventured into the likes of sang choy bau, rendang with roti and fish with ginger and shallots and still like it. Everything is fresh, tasty and also huge!
The dining room is pretty basic and lacks the niceties of things like ice buckets, but the service has always been timely and most hospitable. After a few quiet weeknights there, we wondered if they were suffering from being a bit further down the regular beaten track on Broughton St, or were even still paying for the past owners reputation (after some pretty ordinary experiences in that period, we gave it a wide berth).
However, a recent Friday night showed that they are getting reasonable business; no doubt others like ourselves looking for a relaxed, cheap and cheerful, friday night unwind with friends over a couple of bottles of BYO.
Now if we could only get a vietnamese place in Kirribilli, preferably in place of one of the Thais......

It's not that flash and comprises a kitchen and counter downstairs, from which a rather brisk trade in takeaway seems to be taking place; and a rather shabby dining room upstairs. But it's worth the trip to the very tail end of the Kirribilli dining strip (it's further on past the pub in the opposite direction of all the other multitudes of eating establishments) for some good, honest Asian food.
Admittedly, we've only tried the wonton noodle soups which we consider the type of heartwarming, comfort food that too often is done poorly. Well, really enjoy it here as the wontons are fresh and tasty, and the seafood version has a generous serve of varied fresh and chunky aquatic species. There was quite a crowd there yesterday enjoying hefty serves of nice looking dishes, especially of the Malaysian variety.
Just the ticket for us when we're looking for a change from Thai (and who isn't these days???), don't feel like washing up, and don't feel like getting dressed up! Though it looks like an eat 'n' run place, you can take BYO as well and enjoy your meal a little more leisurely which we may just do after a few drinks at the Kirribilli pub one of these Friday nights.
