I love this place. I go there often and portions are usually generous, given the crowds I decided to get takeaway today and only got 3 king prawns. I expected a minimum of 6 prawns and even then I think thats quite light on. Kinda disappointed, will go back, but will be asking how many prawns at the point of ordering.
For me, this place produces The benchmark laksa, lumpia, hor fan, etc. I think I've been spoilt by this place every since uni at Phillip St (Ok now you know how roughly old I am and where I went to school) because I've never found a laksa I like better, whether in Sydney, Singapore or Penang.
Quantities are generous and the service is fast. Often it's too crowded so maybe go in the arvo or on Saturday. I think they suit Australians' tastes a bit better by going light on the curry, making the soup thick and sweet and adding heat through the chilli, although I know a Malaysian who loves their Assam Laksa special.
The best Laksa I have ever had. Tried restaurants in most of Australia's and NZ's capital cities and none come close. Even tried in Malaysia and Singapore and they do not have the quality. No the ambience is ordinary but hey its street food with a seat. For less than $10 one can have a great meal. I love the cooked and chopped chilli also. Get a bib and save your shirt/blouse. I've followed the owner around for more than 10 years.
Just what I expected from a warung, busy, noisy and cheap. Great Laksa and pretty quick considering the crowd. The laksa is spicy and hot, a bit light on for tofu but overall I'll be going back.
The food was ok, I like the Fried Flat Noodle but the service was way too awful. Me and my friends were having lunch and chatting, before we even completed finished, the cleaner came and took our plates away. Then after that we were asked to go because the other people wants to get our table. I know it is a busy place but at least they should respect customers. My friends also had this similar experience in the past. We will not go back to this place regardless of the food.
This place is famous for its Malaysian curry laksa. If I can still remember the authentic taste of curry laksa, this place has the closest resemblance to it. I hope the locals will come to this place to taste authentic curry laksa instead of going for the Thai or Chinese fake "laksa".
Relatively speaking, it's a great restaurant, very authentic, there's a lively buzz about the place. Sometimes it gets too busy around lunch time. Don't expect the Ritz, it's a pretty ugly place to be honest, but I've been coming here since I was a kid when they were on Castlereagh St and subsequently moved to Hunter St. It's really just amazing food. Fast efficient service from some lovely people.
Awful service and mediocre food. Not sure why the big hype about the laksa. Maybe after reading the reviews my expectations were much higher. Had better in Sydney.
Had the laksa after I read everyones rave reviews. Probably hyped myself up too much. The soup is quite nice I suppose. I've had similar! But you were right, the skinless chicken is sooooo tender! Perfect!
This is a treat for anyone with a palate for Malay-Chinese food. The Malaya when in George Street had the best beef curry in town, before it went downhill and up market. Now my vote is with this place for beef curry. Oh, and did someone mention the Kapitan prawns or the laksa. The place in Hunter Street is definitely not impressive as restaurants go, laminex tables and a barn, but that is like complaining about the picture frame when you buy a van Gogh. Absolutely consistent.
