This is one of the best sushi train/bar in Sydney thus far. Expect to queue, otherwise try to arrive early.
There is very few (perhaps no) sushi train/bar in Sydney that serves tuna belly (toro). Absolutely love the quality of toro and they costs at reasonable price tag of $5.6 for two chu-toro nigiri and $3.6 for one oo-toro nigiri.
Other highlights are the torched scallop, torched salmon belly and unagi (eel), thank to their smoky (kabayaki) sauce that is well-balanced and not overly sweet.
We ended our dinner with a serve of greentea creme brulee with red bean paste hidden in the midst. Two thumbs up!
I always thought this place must be good because of the queue, not so, nearly everything is covered in mayonnaise, bland tasting and too big a portion, you nearly need a knife and fork to eat it. Three appetising plates cost $18 including green tea, and I left half of my food behind cos it tasted disappointing, overpriced! If you're prepared to travel for fantastic sushi go somewhere else in manly, it rocks! and really good value for money Take my word! I wish I still lived closer to it!
There are a lot of sushi train restaurant in the city but no one can attract the crowds like Makoto. The rice is soft, the ingredient is fresh. I think it is slightly expensive, however, if you go to cheap sushi train and tasted the cold rice you will regret.
I lived near Makoto in World Square so I usually go there when I crave for sushi. Food is ok, they offer some twists to the otherwise boring sushi, which I appreciate. However, there are some disappointment too, like the ebi tempura handroll. Mainly because the batter is far from what I'd call 'tempura'. It reminds me of those pre-mix batter that we can get in some Asian stores. Thus, it tastes so wrong overall.
Some of the sushi are also overpriced, like the Sydney Sandwich. I personally think $5.80 for that is a little on the high side. I don't expect much on the ambience since it's a sushi bar after all, but, I'd expect that they'd at least have seats/stools that allow us to place our bag other than on the floor or in our lap. It becomes especially tedious to eat when we happen to carry a lot of things that day!
I'd still come here to eat but if I were to move away, I think I won't make special trip here just to have their sushi. Not when the variety is so limited.
I think this place is only good in marketing! the people lined up outside all the time make you think that the place is good but the reality is different. The real thing going on is that the place is too small nothing more.
The food is ok but some things are a bit overpriced in comparison to other sushi places! to all people who say that the sushi here is tasty and its one of the best I am sorry to tell you but you don't know what good sushi is, I will not recommend or go to this place. Its too crowded and there is no privacy! we are all jammed in a corner of a building just like sardines! bad bad bad!
Food: Ordinary, just like any other Japanese sushi train I would say. So nothing too special.
Ambience: It was busy and squashy as we had 3 people in our group and placed onto a 2 seater table. Ended up sitting close to the walkway which meant having to keep moving in and out. Frustrating. Not worth the long wait in line for this.
Service: Polite but not very attentive. That could be excused a little as it was kind of busy.
Value: Expensive for the overall experience. The food etc. Won’t be coming back here again. Very overrated.
Good quality sushi. There wasn't a large range of variety though. There are always huge queues to get in. Is it worth the wait? Probably not but drop in if there are no queues.
