I've been to this place numerous times since it opened but the quality has diminished somewhat recently. Came here for dinner on Wednesday night around 7pm. It wasn't packed but still had plenty of people, on a weekend, you'd be lucky to get in with a 10 minutes wait. Tonight, the sushi didn't look fresh. It looked as though it had sat on the train for some time.
The place has 2 separate trains and the train where my partner and I were seated didn't even have a sushi chef making fresh sushi the whole time we were there (30 minutes). We decided to order off the menu where the sushi did not appear on the train and the fish was fresh (salmon torro, tuna torro, kingfish).
The soft shell crab handroll was a hit, as it always had been. The crab was crispy yet succulent. We also ordered an old favorite, the nebayaki udon, which did not fail to impress.
Overall, the quality was still good for what we ordered and the price we paid. But it didn't have the same feel as it used to have if I'm having to order off the menu rather than taking plates off the 'sushi train'.

The sushi is always fresh and prepared right in front of you. I normally get an udon as well, which is both filling and great value. I don't really like the seating though, it can get a little uncomfortable and bags on hooks under the tables makes it somewhat difficult to access. Overall, as a customer of 4 years I am very pleased with Makoto Chatswood.

Awesome! The best sushi train in Sydney, I have eaten in Pitt st as well and they are the same level. Everything was delightful with a great of variety, the service was discreet, but the food was phenomenal. Can't wait to be back.

Makoto has changed heaps since I first visited. The food quality is not as fresh as it used to be. The variety is so-so now. In all honesty, this will be the last time I visit this place. (quite sad really...)

Good food and good atmosphere. Price is ok but if slightly lower can be more attractive.

This is the most updating sushi experience so far to date. I generally know what to expect from a cheap eateries or sushi stand and you pay for fast food. However, given the success of Makoto on Pitt Street where I am a customer since they first opened up, Makoto Chatswood is a total let down.
I see lines outside the restaurant a lot of times in the past and given it is a known name to me so I decided to go there for dinner last week. It was the wrong decision.
Service – normal and polite.
Sashimi - let’ s start with this, the salmon sashimi was must have been frozen in the fridge for such a long time that it has lost its texture, its taste, its color and the flesh feel like paper being soaked in the water for too long
Sushi – had a couple of “gold” and “silver” plates but it was ordinary. The most important thing is that the vinegar in the sushi rice is not even balanced. It felt so heavy that I found it hard to swallow the sushi down my throat.
We had enough as we are foodies by nature so we decided not to waste any more time in this place and left. This is such a bad experience and because of this, we had to dine elsewhere for a proper and more delicious dinner.
One thing I learnt now is that don’t trust the queue and the successful parent shop (all part of the Masuya Group) does not guarantee the same to their new shops… you would have thought that they will due to their thriving business.

We were regulars until the poor service and hospitality demonstrated tonight. We waited 20 minutes for 6 mini salmon rolls for our kid and had to keep checking back for our order. Turns out they kept giving the same dish to another child at the other end of the table. This was quite frustrating as that's the only thing our child eats.
Throughout the night, they kept getting our orders wrong and whenever we chased it up with them they accused us of 'already have eaten the sushi' and shifting us with the blame. But we were chasing up our orders with the plate, so it wasn't like we were not planning to pay for it.
The new staff are terribly rude and cannot even communicate simple orders such as one single hand roll. Left the restaurant in anger as staff constantly demonstrated bad attitude the whole entire night towards my family. Truly disappointed.

Excellent and fresh sushi. We've been going here for years and the quality never dissapoints. There's always good variety of sushi across different price ranges, and they're always happy to make you a specific sushi if its not on the sushi train. Sometimes we just get a big takeway tray for special occasions and never dissapoints with our guests -always top quality sushi. Highly recommend.

This place has a great reputation and deservedly so. Love the architecturally interesting ceiling and the relaxing music adds to the chilled out atmosphere. Service is regular and friendly. Loved the wide variety of nigiri, particularly the placards that explain the type and characteristics of each fish. The soft shell crab & grilled scallop conveyor's were delightful! Fresh and beautifully presented. A reliable choice in Chatswood. Could even suggest extending the dinner hours :)
