First time we have been for lunch and we were both impressed by the food just like the Hawker markets in Singapore but better than most of the ones we have tried over there. Enjoyed the soft shell crabs and the desserts were great. Friendly service and they took the time to come out of the kitchen to explain how they cook the Assam laksa and other dishes. Will be going again to work through the menu.
Good home style food, cheerfully forgetful service initially which they made up for later. Nice people! Fried radish cake was comfortingly stodgy, long beans were fresh and tender and well flavoured, nasi lemak was ordered and enjoyed by everyone (though I didn't get any rendang, the coconut rice was brilliant), soft pork ribs were soft but a little 'standard chinese-y' ie bit too sweet and sticky (and Red), CKT was a bit too bland, Hainan chicken rice was lovely. Great desserts. Especially liked the sago and gula melaka, made just the way my mum makes it, set, not runny.
The food was awesome. Personally, I went for the lime sauce chicken which was fabulous. It's also very close to Thornleigh Station so that's easy. Just go there, it's worth it.
Being from Singapore, I have grown increasingly disillusioned with Singaporean/ Malaysian restaurants here. There are very few good ones in Sydney. Alice makes a good effort at it and the food was reasonably authentic (which is more than can be said for most of their competitors), but not particularly well done or exciting. They make up for it with great service and plentiful parking on the street. If you are around this area, it is not a bad choice. If I ever get a weekday off work, I will try to get here for lunch because the lunch specials look more interesting.
Decided to try Alice's after hearing good things although the location is hidden away - we had never noticed it even though we live locally. What a great find.....we will be back for sure. The char kway teoh was the best I have ever had and the beef rendang and chicken sambal were excellent.
Alice is lovely, and the place is clean and organised. You will pay more than average but with so many dodgy Asian restaurants out there, we prefer quality food over cheap food.
We are regulars at Makan @ Alice’s. Love the char tau kuih, Hainan chicken rice, prawn noodles and chendol. Assam laksa is pretty good too. Can be quite expensive especially the desserts, but one of the better Malaysian restaurants in Sydney.
Been here twice with my Malaysian in-laws and this is the best Malaysian food we've had in Sydney. Many of the dishes are as good, if not better than many of the hawker stalls in Malaysia.
The roti canai and chicken curry is to die for, the beef rendang is tender (but not tenderised) and so full of flavour. The yong tau foo is sweet and delicious. Nasi lemak, not so special, although the sambal eggs side dish is good. Some great kuih too - especially like the kuih serimudra.
The young wait staff were really friendly, despite the busy crowd at the Sunday lunch. It's not a romantic, posh, formal restaurant but neither should it be. That's not what Malaysian dining is about! Only downside is that it's not centrally located, but we'll still be back to eat.
Best malaysian hawker style food. So authentic. I tried most of the specials and they were all good, YUM YUM!!! Love the kueh also. Good service. Food is a bit pricey but hey! they were so good and I don't mind ! Have been a frequent customer.
