Went here with the family for Son's birthday. Ambience was good with German band who were very entertaining and accommodating with a round of "Happy Birthday To You". Beer was good but expensive, wine list was limited. Food was nice but once again expensive for what it was. Fun but not great value for money.
Hard not to get a kick out of going to the Lowenbrau. I have been several times over the years and despite the food not being exceptional I find myself wanting to go again. Escapism, perhaps, in getting away from standard pubs in the city.
Whether it be the cobblestones out the front, the large underground hall, staff in traditional uniforms, the 1 litre steins with schnapps or the German band playing you can't help but feel like you are away from home.
I have to agree with previous reviewer that the food quality has gone backwards last few years. I had the veal cheeks with mash and salad on most recent visit and probably the worst meal I have had there. Gravy/sauce was bland, there was no salad and serving was surprisingly smaller than usual. I have always left the Lowenbrau splitting at the sides
My partner and I attended on the same day there was an Aroma Festival at the rocks and the place was packed so certainly impressed with wait staff considering pressure they were under. We were taken to a table straight away without a booking, drinks order taken within minutes and didn't wait too long for our meals. They were also very friendly despite it being obvious they were feeling the stress.
Whilst most recent experience wasn't to rave about no doubt I will be drawn in again in several months time. Don't expect too much just enjoy the atmosphere and those big German beers.
We, as a group of 4, have been here several times over the last month and have enjoyed the visit each time. The service is a bit hit and miss, some of the waitresses are very friendly and helpful, while others tend to be rather distant and disinterested. Unfortunately, on a busy night, the one uniting factor is that it takes a long time to get noticed when you first sit down.
The food here is basically decent bistro fare, with slight Bavarian twists. It's pricey, but the servings are generous and tasty enough. The delicious pork knuckle platter was particularly filling and took two of us to get through.
The focus of the Lowenbrau, though, is of course the massive selection of beer and schnappes that they have. We worked our way down the menu and found some sensational beers and spirits, we couldn't fault the ones we enjoyed. The Lowenbrau Original and the famous Stiegl were both served ice-cold in a large glass stein, for a very reasonable price when compared to the price of Australian beers in nearby pubs. The schnappes available were also delicious with flavours as esoteric as sour cherry and honey.
In the end, your experience at the Lowenbrau will depend on what you are seeking. It is not a fine-dining restaurant with masterfully crafted menus, it is not a relaxed pub to sit quietly after work at, it is a loud, energetic and very busy watering hole for small groups to get together to eat, drink and be merry.
Food has definitely gone down in the past few years. For the price that you pay, its more worth it to go to the Belgium Beer Cafe or somewhere else. What a pity.
I was with a group of seven. We had a fun time. The German band was playing on and off during the night (so at least we had intermittent periods of relative quiet!) and members of our group enjoyed involvement in the audience participation. The place was moderately busy and the service was quite attentive. I certainly have no complaints in that regard.
The food was quite good. Everyone reported enjoying their chosen meals, apart from the saurkraut (probably unavoidable in a German restaurant and should have been anticipated!).
I went to this restaurant on Queen's birthday, I really feel disappointed with the service, the waitress is so rude, since I don't know any German so I told the girl I would like to order the beer on the firth line and she told me that they don't accept order by number. Remember, what I paid is not only for food but also service.
Went there at the weekend with the wife and kids. Awfu! Been before with the family and without the kids for drinks and it was much better. The place was busy, but basically there just wasn't enough staff. How hard can it be to hire more waitresses. Every time we wanted anything we had to go to the wait station to ask someone to come over.
Kids meals were $12 with nothing else included. Fish and chips came with three tiny pieces of fish. We complained and asked for more (which we got, but when it came it was almost burnt). The kids schnitzel was a pretty measly portion with low quality meat (fat and gristle).
My schnitzel was pretty disappointing. Chicken thigh meat and not breast. How cheap can you get? My wife ordered the ceasar salad. The schnitzel that came with it was cold. Yuk! Cold, breadcrumbed deep fried food. Who's idea of palatable was that?
I wouldn't go back again. You can get better food at the local pub. The umpah band is fun if you're in the mood and the beer is good (but expensive), but don't bother with the turgid food and awful service.
