I was appalled by their can't-be-bothered service on several occasions and stopped patronizing entirely. There's a lot more cafes with better service and better food in the area. Afterall, it's Newtown.
Some swear by the coffee here but I have been stung by the service on more than one occasion. The pancakes look tremendous, and I have never had any issues with the food but the service has been some of the worse that I have ever had, inactive and aloof to the point of rudeness. I am not racing back when there are so many cafes on the lower end of King St.
Had brekkie there yesterday. Menu was long but very generic. Coffee was ok, not great. Service with the food was good but couldn't get anyones attention for a 2nd coffee. Stood at the register for 3 minutes whilst the lazy waitress chatted to her friend who was standing next to me. I indicated I'd leave without paying if she continued to ignore me. She then did the eye roll, real nice service! I wouldn't give it a 2nd go.
After walking for ages past my work to grab a quick bite for lunch, I happened upon this great little place ... I made a difficult order (asking for a half sized salad, with this and that added) and nothing was too much trouble! They brought it out really quickly, and only charged me half price (which was a god send on this particular day).
I have told everyone at work that this is where we are going next time we want to go out for lunch! I would thoroughly reccommend their salads and I can't wait to try their breakfasts!
We went here after trying to go to a restaurant down the street which was full and looked cramped with really rude wait staff who tried to convince us to take a table outside in the rain but that's just a side note. Anyway Lou Jack's was roomier and a nicer ambience and we were allowed a leisurely breakfast with friends. The food was better than average but not absolutely magnificent. My husband said his omelette was just ok but my pesto scrambled eggs with haloumi were great as was a croissant we shared which was one of the best either of us has had at any Sydney cafe. The crowd was a lot of urban parents with young kids and single types from around the neighbourhood. Would go back if around the area but wouldn't go out of my way to go there either.
This was formerly one of the best cafes in Newtown, I use to visit here almost every day of the week. Unfortunately, price increases in conjunction with decreases in the sizes of coffee's and meals (yes, coffee's - only a third of a cup now) have reduced my patronage. Their breakfasts remain the key reason I still go (perhaps once per month now). And yes, they have fried Haloumi (cheese).
We stumbled across Lou Jack's late one afternoon and we delighted to find that the breakfast menu was still on offer. The hollandaise sauce was a bit rich but the meals were delicious and the service was prompt. We will be back.
I have breakfast/brunch here regularly. The little courtyard out the back is a peaceful escape from King St and the food is always delicious especially the salads. Coffee is pretty good too. They could perhaps use some more detail on the menu though. Some of the breakfast items listed (eg. the "Peasants Breakfast") could use a description of sorts. Staff are usually nice and helpful.
The service was appalling and the waitress was useless. It took 10mins to get my coffee order, only after I asked for it. Then we waited another half an hour for our food which never arrived! We ended up walking out in disgust. I could've cooked my own breakfast myself!!
