Fabulous Vietnamese. We eat here all the time. The food is amazing (we love the vietnamese pancake and the duck curry) and the service fast, efficient and friendly. A great family friendly restaurant with great city views.
Visited Lien at Glebe based on the reviews here and it's certainly worthy of the high marks but it's a little expensive for a quick eat-and-run and the service was a little slow to begin with.
The food was first class and we opted for the Prawn and Crab Rolls which really hit the spot for starters. We followed up with Pad Thai, Sweet and Sour Pork (the young are so unadventurous!) and I just had to try the Laksa. I wasn't disappointed. As I said, the food was first class and ironically the service improved as the tables filled. The ladies waiting the tables were friendly and chatty and it made for a great family experience.
But the real bonus at Lien is the magnificent view across to the city from the terrace, as others have commented. Not the best Asian in Sydney but well above average and you could do a lot worse than slip in here and enjoy good food and a spectacular view.
Remember though, Lien is only open for dinner 7 days... we visited during the day only to find it closed.
Lien has an eclectic menu with some terrific Vietnamese dishes like sugar-cane prawns and Vietnamese pancakes and great flavoured Asian "staples" like salt and pepper prawns/calamari and chicken with black bean. Classic suburban Asian "decor", great value basic wines or BYO and the staff are happy and friendly. Its plain appearance disguises a top little restaurant. Give it a try.
We've been going there for pre-theatre dining for years now. Best mini-spring rolls we've tasted but then we haven't yet had a dish we didn't like. Service is great. Ambience wasn't always the best but the recent renovations have done wonders.
I was very surprised to see comments that the food was a little over-priced. You guys should see what they charge in the 'burbs for food of this quality. In my experience the Lien offers tremendous value. Not quite as good when it was in its prime in the 80's and 90's but still a great little restaurant. Apparently the 'old' chef is back which should enhance the experience. Friendly rather than over-abundant service, quiet atmosphere and a few nice fleeting views of the city. I highly recommend this for a relatively inexpensive and enjoyable place to eat in the inner west.
My partner & I used to go here occasionally when we went to the Valhalla (and under a different ownership) but haven't been in quite a while due to the closure of the cinema. The menu is basically the same. We had the Vietnamese pancakes (as we do every time!), which were still crispy and tasty, though the amount of pork in the filling was rather spartan. The braised prawns with vegetables was a generous size (ten prawns) and tasty in a simple home cooked type of way. The Bo Kho was okay but could have had a greater complexity of flavour. It is a cheap neighbourhood restaurant and if you go there, don't go expecting a gastronomic revelation but its still a pleasant experience.
This is a real find. The food is fantastic and the servings are large. The service is extremely friendly - feels like a family-owned restaurant and home cooked rather than gourmet. It is a very large place that feels a bit like a country restaurant, but that is part of its charm.
