My partner and I have been to this restaurant twice in the past year and both times have been rudely turned away by the maitre d'. The first time was understandable as the restaurant was busy and we did not have a booking, although being yelled at and having the door slammed in our faces wasn't excusable.
We tried again a few nights ago, it was 7:30 on a quiet Sunday night with only a handful of people dining, but when we asked the maitre d' if we could have a table for 2, she flatly said 'no' as though we had made an absurd request, and it was only after we stood there for a moment stunned that she said 'problem with the chef'.
We don't believe that being turned away twice is a coincidence, it's quite evident she just did not want to serve us. Either way, we will not bother trying to come here again next time we visit Leura, as there is a perfectly nice restaurant across the street (Silk's Brasserie) with warm service and good food.
What a discovery, my beautiful lady and I wandered in here on friday night. Our host was fantastic and the food was absolutely divine. We will be coming here for many years to come.
If you love drama and calamity then this place is fantastic. We dined on a quiet evening and enjoyed every minute. This restaurant is still the best we have been too. The host is a real character and has constant arguments with her husband, quite exciting at times lol
The duck was gorgeous both in orange and the cherry sauce and the strawberry romanoff was a perfect ending. Yes the bill was $120 for us both but we had such a good time we can't wait to go back. This restaurant is run by real people, not fake people pleasers! Unique in every way.
What a fiasco. Seriously hilarious if you didn't have to pay. First of all we waited for about an hour for french onion soup, imagine our surprise when the bill came and the advertised price of $18 had morphed into $24 due to the addition of gruyere cheese! An argument then ensued and we were told that we should have expected this cost! Then we had the joy of two of the most inconsiderate diners. It was a hot night and these two were near the open door where a nice breeze came in.
On whim they would shut the door if it was too drafty, never mind the other diners who were seated further back from the door. Clearly this was not seen as being inappropriate and selfish by the maitre d' who noted the action and ignored it.
We arrived at 7 pm and received our main at 10 pm. For most of the evening the whole room could hear the banging, swearing and bashing from the kitchen, again ignored, and no apologies of the time we waited or the side line of kitchen shonkery acknowledged.
Other diners were even unluckier. The couple who arrived half an hour after us just received their entree when we left at 10.30 pm. The cook decided at some point that it was time to go for a spin in a convertable and left all the diners in limbo as he did laps around Leura mall. The dish pig took over the skillett as this pause in service was undertaken. This all apparently ok as cookie waved like a maniac as he did his drive bys.
If you have a good sense of humour, time on your hands and money to burn go and experience a night you will never forget!
We absolutely love this place. It is, without a doubt our favourite restaurant, anywhere for a number of reasons. My partner and I both feel like Mireille is one of our aunties! she fusses like crazy. The atmosphere is so relaxed, the decor feels as though you're in someones loungeroom and as per the previous comments, you don't want to leave. Best for a long sunday lunch or winter dinner.
For entrees, we adore the goats cheese, the scallops (divine!) and the crab cakes. I have had the fillets mignon, the beef bourguignon and the trout. All are amazing, Rene's sauces are incredible. Yes you'll wait for your food, but if you're worried about that you probably won't appreciate Le Gobelet. We took my father there some weeks ago, he's travelled a lot and has not stopped raving, one of the best meals he has had, anywhere. Lastly, considering the size of the portions and the great service the bill is my last concern! Enjoy.
Quirky, almost a French version of "Fawlty Towers" at times, but just so delightful. The decor and atmosphere is a treat, and the food is terrific. Good reliable traditional French food. Not a quick meal, but you don't want to leave anyway! Loved it.
First, this is not a "Sydney" restaurant. Following a recent trip to France, I was keen to finally sample this restaurant. So I equipped myself with the most 10 recent (and varied) reviews, and prepared my expectations for a Sunday lunch.
The food is traditional and very good. Our entrees included steaming Escargot with plenty of garlic, butter and parlsey, cream of asparagus and cauliflower soup and tasty crab pancake. Our mains included rabbit, duck with cherries (with skin on and a little duck fat - yum), and rack of lamb, all hearty servings.
The side serving of legumes was a tiny trio of mashed potato, red cabbage and a green pea dish. It is tiny in comparison with the mains dishes, however, all of us were more than satiated on completion of the meal.
Almost all of the previous reviewers comments are true. My advice is to take your time, enjoy your company, and relax! Hopefully you won't find another restaurant like this.
The best part of the evening was the ‘entertainment’ provided by the waitress. Her running back and forth to the kitchen, and her outbursts of French/English kept the small number of guests entertained and left little time for private conversation! The service is best described as ‘like watching the grass grow’.
My wife enjoyed her Onion Soup and Chicken special, hence, a food rating of 5. My Goats Cheese entrée was not inspiring and my rack of Lamb, apart from being overcooked was covered in a sauce that completely obliterated any taste of lamb. The wine list, apart from being expensive, was well below average. Many of the listed wines were not available. An expensive restaurant lacking any finesse in food, wine or service.
I love this place. My Husband and I make eating here an integral part of our weekends in the mountains. The food is always fantastic, the service slow, which we love, the hostess welcoming and entertaining and the room warm, cosy, romantic and inviting. Leave all urban expectations in the city and wile away the afternoon in this fabulous and rare jewel of a restaurant.
Food was great! However the waitress ruined the whole experience. She had no idea what she was doing! When asked what was involved in certain dishes. She ran back and forth from the kitchen 3 times and still didn't know what she was talking about!
