I went searching for Lao Fu Qing after seeing a good rating here, but it was only thanks to the street number that I found it under its English name 'New Taste Noodle House'.

Really really great food, and with a variety of dishes from all over China that aren't the usual Aussie-Chinese offerings. We had a wonderful meat filled rice-pancake from Hubei (dou pi), as well as a type of vegetarian dumpling that I've never had before.

'New taste Noodle' also has a lovely feel to it, clean, fresh and bright with a higher emphasis on service than other Liverpool Road restaurants that we've been to.

Update Sept, '11: Food still great, service still pretty good, ambience not as good as what we remembered.

I came here with my family for a belated birthday celebration on Sunday evening 22 November, quite probably one of the hottest November days I've ever experienced in Sydney. Lucky for my sister and me that we got a park directly across the road. When we walked into the restaurant it was a cool, quiet oasis of calm with only a couple of tables occupied.

The ambience is very modern and clean and there was some nice jazz music playing softly in the background. Wine glasses (its BYO) and a water jug were delivered promptly by the very friendly young waitress. We ordered some entrees when the other 4 family members arrived: duck pancakes, shallot pancakes and the pork and chive dumplings, all very tasty and I seriously could have just kept ordering from the snacks and entrees list as they all sounded very yummy indeed.

For mains we had the soft shell crab, salt and pepper prawns, pork with chilli, some steamed veges and a noodle with seafood dish. This place has a seriosuly good chilli sauce that is definitely not for the faint of heart. The food was extremely delicious and we ate the lot. Bill came to just over $20 a head. I orderded some takeaway for the house-bound boyfriend, the pork and chive dumplings and the braised beef brisket with rice, he totally demolished the lot and did not speak a word whilst doing so, except for the odd yummy, good, hmm sounds. I really liked this place and have no hesitation in recommending it.

I'm going through a dumpling phase at the moment, and based on the few reviews here, I decided to give it a shot! I was really impressed! I haven't really been to any of the other places in Ashfield, but this has become one of my current favourite places!

Their noodle soups are perfect. The stock is actual stock, not full of MSG as you would get in some places, and it is classically flavoured. There are so many different dishes to try. I love their dumplings with soup in them (siu long bao), the only trivial complaint being that it is slightly big, so you I can't put the whole thing in my mouth the way I usually do.

Also, I have to mention that the serving sizes are quite large here! Between myself and a friend (we both eat quite a lot), we struggled to finish a noodle soup, dumplings and stir fried noodles! So far I've only tried classic dishes, and this is one of the better places I've been to who know how to cook! I'm looking forward to exploring the rest of their menu.

This place is definitely worth trying if you're into food from the Northern area of China.

Great little restaurant. Newly renovated so its sparkling clean. The noodle soups are all very tasty. According to the boss they put a lot of care into making the soup bases from scratch and you can tell from the immense flavours with every sip (and slurp)! It is not the cheapest on liverpool road in Ashfield but for the quality and nicer ambience (not hard compared to most hold in the wall joints on the strip) its well worth it!

Great little restaurant. Clean and simple layout with easy to read menus for Chinese and non-Chinese, all of which already puts it ahead of many other Ashfield diners.

One of my favourite test dishes in this Northern Chinese dominated suburb are the Steamed Pork Dumplings and LFQ passes easily. The pastry doesn't break or stick to the steamer and is quite al dente. The pork filling is nicely flavoured, more intense then that of Din Tai Fung in the City. Most importantly there is plenty of flavoursome soup within the dumpling, first timers beware, it burns!

I am yet to try all the myriad of dishes on the menu but my current favourite is the Salted Egg Yolk Soft Shell Crab, the intense flavour and texture of this dish works better than with Mud or Snow Crab as you can eat the entire thing!
Definitely a new favourite eating spot.

This place is fairly new and still a bit of a hidden gem at the less frequented eastern end of Liverpool Road. I have come two or three times for lunch, ordering only the noodle soups so far but am yet to be disappointed.

The space is very clean and well lit, with modern furnishings and a minimalist approach to decor (as contrasted with some other places on the Liverpool Rd strip). Staff do not speak a great deal of English but are pleasant and efficient.

Lao Fu Qing is quickly becoming one of my favourite Ashfield haunts...
