The Lansdowne Hotel has been a bit of a roller coaster eating experience for me.
Initially I was brought to the Lansdowne 4 yrs ago for a $5 Chicken Schnitzel, then it was for a $5 Schnitzel or Spaghetti Bolognese and over time my repertoire of meals increased. The chips were steak chips and great unlike the anorexic chips sneaking into pubs from the likes of McDonalds, so when the Lansdowne brought in the malnourished chips I was disappointed.
It affected the calibre of the meal though I was still generally impressed with the meal despite this. The pizza's, however, were a no go lacking in topping and occasionally, when busy, meals could have been warmer, however, for $5 or even the $10 meals it is good value which is hard to find in the inner city. When all you need is a drink and cheap but good meal you'll find it here with service with a smile the way it should be.
The $5 meals cost $6! Food is decent, not fantastic. Some dishes are better than others. Nachos not great. And the fact that you have to buy a drink means it is effectively more than $6 anyway.
I have been coming here regularly since I moved to the area in 2001. I have been wondering how long they could keep serving meals for $5 and stay in business. This question was answered when they recently raised the price for the basic menu to $6. Even so, I don't see how you could mark it less than 10 on value for money. There is quite a good selection of dishes for $6, also a $10 and a $15 menu. The food is quite edible and in reasonable quantity.
Service is friendly but the meals can take a while to arrive. During term time the place is packed with students after 7 so I usually go before then. The ambience is good - large eating area with good quality furnishings, some views across to Queen Victoria Park, gas fires in winter.
The best value meal in town. Not sure why people are complaining about lack of sides as they're not that bad. Besides what do you expect for $5??
Can't go past the chicken snitty with mash and diane sauce. And I'll back the earlier comment about buying a beer/wine instead of a soft drink as it's basically the same price. You can't get a snitty and a beer and get change from a tenner anywhere else.
My tip is to buy a jug downstairs and take it up to the restaurant, that way you don't have to buy a drink when ordering.
If you are looking for value, I have yet seen a place in Sydney that compares! The $5 dollar menu has something for everyone, and most (not all) is quite tasty. Plus grab a jug of 4X for only $8.00 Wow. As to the $4 soda's = duh, order a beer, or juice, or wine. I won't pay $4.00 for a schooner of coke. My fav's: steak and mash, chicken burger, and spag bol are all yummy.
What a great venue and what value for $5-00. Delivery time of meals, a little slow, however, there were approx 150 people dining, mainly students. Bar staff and waitresses were extremely friendly even though they were rushed off there feet. Take our family and enjoy the experience.
If you're happy with middling pub fare then the Lansdowne will suffice. The food is generally of a decent quality, and the interior is homely and cheerful. Unfortunately, service is generally slow and brusque, and it's not uncommon for meals to be forgotten altogether, or arrive very far out of sequence. Also, the surreptitious pricing of a $5 meal with a mandatory $4 soft drink grates on me. Simply admit that it's really a $7 meal and be done with it.
We went for the kitsch factor, our curiosity got the better of us and we wanted to know what $5 got you these days. We went with a group and assumed all the portions would be tiny so we ordered plates to share, the fish and chips, bangers and mash, wedges and spring rolls. Even though we had a few complaints, I have to say it was better than we were expecting.
They all tasted as good as a $5 meal gets but we were confused, while some plates came out over filling and with side salads, some (like the fish) came with barely 10 chips on the plate which we though was odd considering the trouble they went to with the side salad on the spring rolls, the mountain of wedges we couldn't finish and the mountain of mash potato (even if it was out of a packet) with the bangers. I think the portions need to be more consistent.
My only real complaint is the compulsory drink, (look closely, it's in tiny writing on the bottom of the menu) if you aren't drinking alcohol, the $4 for a soft drink makes the decent $5 meal, a very average $9 meal. Considering $9 can get you some really good Thai down the road with change left over, I suspect the $5 meal is only a bargain on a night out when you know you will be drinking regardless.
Either way I think we will find out way back every now and then on a late night out when we aren't feeling fussy.
New management has changed this place for the better obviously. I used to pay $5 for a steak and mash and get a steak that was worth no more than $5. These days you get a steak that you'd pay about $20 for anywhere else! Great atmosphere. Free entertainment. I like this place and will be back on a more regular basis.
Really disappointing. This place claims to serve $5 meals but they come with no sides at all - as in, nachos with no salsa, no guacamole, no salad. Just dry chips, with beans and sour cream on the side. I ordered a prawn dish which had five prawns, a piece of lettuce with brown edges and some old-looking slices of tomato, and about ten chips.
My boyfriend had the steak which was also pretty disappointing, cooked wrong and with hardly any sides. I did see some people eating bangers and mash, which looked like pretty good value but I suspect they were the only bright spot. It was also cold and draughty. I have no idea why this place is so popular but it is - it gets busy enough in the evenings that you have to queue up at the bar for as much as ten minutes just to order.
