We went for the kitsch factor, our curiosity got the better of us and we wanted to know what $5 got you these days. We went with a group and assumed all the portions would be tiny so we ordered plates to share, the fish and chips, bangers and mash, wedges and spring rolls. Even though we had a few complaints, I have to say it was better than we were expecting.

They all tasted as good as a $5 meal gets but we were confused, while some plates came out over filling and with side salads, some (like the fish) came with barely 10 chips on the plate which we though was odd considering the trouble they went to with the side salad on the spring rolls, the mountain of wedges we couldn't finish and the mountain of mash potato (even if it was out of a packet) with the bangers. I think the portions need to be more consistent.

My only real complaint is the compulsory drink, (look closely, it's in tiny writing on the bottom of the menu) if you aren't drinking alcohol, the $4 for a soft drink makes the decent $5 meal, a very average $9 meal. Considering $9 can get you some really good Thai down the road with change left over, I suspect the $5 meal is only a bargain on a night out when you know you will be drinking regardless.

Either way I think we will find out way back every now and then on a late night out when we aren't feeling fussy.

New management has changed this place for the better obviously. I used to pay $5 for a steak and mash and get a steak that was worth no more than $5. These days you get a steak that you'd pay about $20 for anywhere else! Great atmosphere. Free entertainment. I like this place and will be back on a more regular basis.

Really disappointing. This place claims to serve $5 meals but they come with no sides at all - as in, nachos with no salsa, no guacamole, no salad. Just dry chips, with beans and sour cream on the side. I ordered a prawn dish which had five prawns, a piece of lettuce with brown edges and some old-looking slices of tomato, and about ten chips.

My boyfriend had the steak which was also pretty disappointing, cooked wrong and with hardly any sides. I did see some people eating bangers and mash, which looked like pretty good value but I suspect they were the only bright spot. It was also cold and draughty. I have no idea why this place is so popular but it is - it gets busy enough in the evenings that you have to queue up at the bar for as much as ten minutes just to order.

The food is good, and it is so nice to see some live music! There is a Johnny Cash Tribute Band that play there every 3rd Saturday of the month. The main singer sounds just like Johnny Cash if you close your eyes, it is quite remarkable how alike they sound. There is also a young girl who plays violin, who is out of this world. Highly recommend it for a free entertaining night out.

Good cheap pub food (recommend the nachos on the $5 menu), good variety, very popular though to expect a wait.

Hey the food is what you expect for five dollars but hey Tuesday nights the trivia dude they have here is awesome, he rocks, he rolls and everyone has a great time and it's all free, go hard or go home Tuesday nights from 8 pm.

The Bangers and Mash on the $5 menu always go down well. The only thing about this is that they only serve two bangers now instead of the three that they used to. Still, it always tastes really good.

Ok, so it's not a fancy schmansy place, but who wants that? You know what you're getting with the Lansdowne, good, cheap pub food (yay for $5 meals!), and a nice place to hang with the mates. Lovin it.

Haven't been to the Landsdown much since my Uni days, so was pleasantly surprised during a recent visit. The place has been cleaned up a bit since it's seedy heyday in the 80's & 90's but still has loads of character. A lively trivia comp was in full swing when we were there, with a mainly student clientelle hitting the $7 jugs bigtime.

The main attraction are the $5 meals though. Portions are large and, while the bistro mightn't win any Michellin awards for innovation or presentation, the food was tasty & honest. Meals did take a while to arrive, but the place was packed (the upstairs alone had about 100+ seated), and the service was much friendlier than in past years.

To sum the Landsdown up these days; an honest pub that doesn't try to be something it's not. Cheap meals and beer, a lively student atmosphere, and free bands make the place well worth a visit for a no-frills, cheap night out.

$5 menu is great! I often come here with a group of friends, it's a good way to catch up and have a cheap meal too. I usually get the chicken schnitzel but I have also tried the chicken parmiagana from the $15 menu which came with a salad as well. Never had any problems with the food! In peak times it can be a long wait though.
