We went there for a lovely dinner it was me and my fiancée. We really enjoyed the atmosphere sitting by the river. We were welcomed and taken to the table by a friendly staff who he asked for our pre dinner drinks the menu was given in a professional manner which was followed by explaining the chef's special which was the surf and turf which we loved the drinks the service and the atmosphere. We felt very comfortable with the service we had a good time and I would recommend this place to everyone.
If you were born after 1980, you're unlikely to appreciate this restaurant. For those of us who grew up, or as adults entertained in the '70's, then this restaurant is a nostalgic little find, perched to overlook a charming daytime view.
If you were born after 1980, you're unlikely to remember having original prawn cocktails at dinner parties (with Barry White in the background), or Mornay sauce on meat, or even an Irish Coffee to finish (they have a whole liqueur coffee menu!). But if you want to reminisce, or please your parents, it's worth a visit.
The service is genuine, old fashioned and knowledgeable. View aside, the interior decor is beyond dated. But a good dust could turn it from dated to retro cool!
The food is not to my liking, but trying something different has to be a welcome thing for anyone. This place doesn't try to be mainstream, or please everyone; it simply does what it does well. And I think my parents would love it!
WOW... Words cannot describe how bad this restaurant is. The restaurant itself is very old and tired and really need of a good cleaning and a referb. The smell inside is really musky and damp so we decided to sit outside. Sitting outside was not a good idea as we tended to get ignored for the whole night, the outside area was very dirty and could use a good clean with some water, sugar soap and a stiff brush.
We had the Rib Eye steak, and I can honestly say it was the worst steak I have ever had in my life. The selection and or grade of meat was the lowest. There were plenty of gristle and sinew in the meat and it was not cooked properly. I asked for medium rare and the steak came out wellL, and very hot to touch when it arrived. When I mentioned this to the staff they did not seem to care and were not prepared to offer a resolution.
Being a Steak restaurant I would expect that they would know how to cook a steak as ordered and "let it rest" before they serve it. The vegatables were as more people here have written, frozen from a bag or appear to be at least, how difficult is it to perpare fresh vegatables?
On a possitive, the location and view of the Lane Cove River are great. If you are after a good steak cooked right and tender, I would avoid this restaurant what ever you do. Try your local RSL, better food and price.
It was lovely looking out over the water with a good plate of food before you. It was a delicious place with friendly staff who will always help you and fair pricing. A good meal.
Having driven past this place for years I had always been intrigued by it. Finally went there for a work lunch, not a good choice. The first thing that hits you is the damp musty smell. We were given a table by the window that had crumbling paint and cobwebs all over it.
The waiter took our orders quickly enough and the meals turned up in a reasonable time. All I can say is I've had better steaks at RSL's for $10. The vegetables ...frozen edgell 3 mix. Would not go back if I was starving.
Easily the worst place to eat out in Sydney. I won't even go as far to call this place a "Restaurant". I could go on all day about this place and its appalling food and service but I'll just say this and you can make your own mind up. If a waiter tells you, because you ordered your steak rare, that you should expect blood pooling on your plate means one thing. Novice's in the kitchen. His excuse was that the grill is extremely hot and the meat needs to be cooked fast giving the steak not enough time to release the blood.
Have these people never heard of resting steak in a warm place for 5 minutes before plating to avoid this?!?! Terrible food. Gravox gravy, frozen vegetables and prices of a decent inner city restaurant and really unprofessional and inappropriate service at times. Black listed forever in my books.
Returned to this restaurant for the first time in years recently and was very pleasantly surprised. We were greeted warmly on arrival and given a lovely table by the window. Pre-dinner drinks and menus arrived promptly and our orders were taken by a very polite and attentive waitress.
Our meals arrived in very good time and I have to say, my steak was one of the best I have ever had! Cooked to perfection, juicy and full of flavour. Have to agree with other reviewers here about the corn - think they should try different veg, though the baked potato was delicious (if slightly old fashioned!) Wouldn't recommend the dessert though as soggy Tiramisu doesn't really cut the mustard.
Looking forward to returning here again and trying an entree and main but skipping the dessert. If you're after a steak cooked to your specifications and excellent service - you won't be disappointed with this steakhouse.
The last word: The previous reviews mostly neglected to mention the two main factors, i.e. the food and the view. Both are really good. The service was fine. No attitude whatsoever. This place does not deserve such polarised viewpoints. Most reviews say more about the reviewer than anything else.
We got steaks. So should you - it's a steakhouse. Order rare as medium rare is almost like well done, with not a hint of pink. The eye fillet w/ pepper sauce was just OK for me. The Angus with red wine sauce was fatty and the sauce was ordinary and more akin to a brown gravy. The corn was way overdone and the vegetables servings were niggardly. Get the potato not the chips, you are an adult aren't you? The $6 wine was worth it.
I wanted so badly to like this place because my parents used to take me here all the time as a child. And although the views are pretty, the ambience is friendly, relaxed and ambient, there was little to say about the food.
I ordered the perch which arrived with what supposed to be white wine sauce but it tasted like pure cream - it was tasteless and as hard as I tried, I couldn't extract any flavour from it! The side of vegetables was equally uninteresting.
Needless to say- my family enjoyed their meals, but they only had steak, chips and mustard. If you're after something fancy, I'd recommend going elsewhere.
I am a regular customer and all I have to say is that I love the food...good job chef.. the steakhouse provides great service and you people need to get out more often and differentiate between good and bad services that are provided nowadays. You usually go to restaurants and the employees serve customers as if they are being forced to. The steakhouse's employees greet customers in the most pleasureable manne.
As for the physical attributes of the restaurant, I have seen renovations, giving it a better and improved look. We will definitely be back soon, looking forward to those juicy steaks. Oh and forgot to mention that humourous waiter..now he has a sense of humour.
