The previous review makes me laugh a little... oh well.
As it says in bold above, Lal Qila is definitely a place to go for Pakistani dishes. The Indian on the menu is probably there for the less adventurous. But those food fraidy cats, they would be missing out, because, (surprisingly?) Pakistani food is pretty awesome. Why didn't we know about this?
Please ignore the previous advice, do order the specials. They are delicious, authentic (like I would know) and generous. Many are double or quadruple size (which is why they cost more - duh).
The waitstaff are informative and entertaining. There was a minor sauce spilling incident, but I'm going to let that go.
Value was excellent. A large group (10) ate to the point of being stuffed for around $20 each, with heaps of take away containers of food at the end of the night. That said, we were mostly drinking water.
Decor is the only major thing I could fault. It's nice and cozy, but chairs look a bit like you're at a function, a wedding maybe even. However, peripheral distractions became inconsequential when eating delicious (exciting) food.

We've eaten here in smaller and larger groups on a number of occasions and the food is very good. Compared with the other Indian offerings along Cleveland Street it seems quite authentic. The specials are also very good but they aren't written anywhere and there's no mention of the prices so when they're recited to you and you're urged to order them, make sure you ask how much they cost. If you steer clear of the specials the value is pretty good.
I organised a large group dinner in December and made the mistake of ordering multiple serves of two of the specials (claypot chicken and goat curry) without asking the price. When the bill came I was very shocked to see that these specials were roughly double and triple the price of most of the main dishes on the menu. We were also charged for an extra serve of each of the four vegetable dishes that I ordered.
The result was a significantly higher cost per head than I anticipated. The person with whom I had placed the order two days earlier did not seem to be present at the end of the evening and the young waiters didn't seem to know much so I had little recourse at the time. I did complain via email a couple of days later but did not receive a reply.
Service on the night was rather slow but it was a busy time of year. I will probably dine here again but it's not likely to be until I get over smarting from being stung.

Love the lamb biryani they make. Very very good. The rest of the dishes are fairly average. Not as good as some of the other Indian restaurants I have been to. They are good on the pocket though. But if you want to taste authentic Biryani go to Lal Quila. The biryani portion is excellent and good value for money.

Was introduced this place by my friend, loved it. Went there again on 18/11/11 with my friends. The waitress helped us with our choice of meals and even threw in a complimentary dish. Food had consistency and was delicious. Will check it out if they maintain their consistency later. When we left they were kind enough to pack the leftovers for us. You've got to try their Shahi kulfi for dessert.

Came here with a large group for a work dinner function on a Friday night.
They were very obliging, giving us our own private area, and were more than happy to have cases of beer and wine delivered during the day which they kept cold until we arrived for dinner.
Food was great and plenty of it, and the service very friendly (and they put up with the loud rowdy group!).

Fantastic Restaurant - 5 Star! Last night was the second time I've been to this restaurant and in our opinion is by far the best indian/paki restaurant in Sydney! (and we've been to most!)
As it is Ramadan we got Free bonuses. We were seated and were served dates and a strawberry milk with rose water in it and an indian spiced battered chips and 2 pieces the filling of samosas deep fried in special batter. Delicious. We were also served a fresh fruit salad for two and this is Before we even ordered anything, so this was all free of charge and a Wonderful touch.
We ordered butter chicken, chicken korma, garlic naan, naan stuffed with mince lamb and rice. Every single dish was perfect. Love the korma and butter chicken and the serving size of each dish was very good.
The staff are very attentive and the food is fresh, aromatic and delicious. Big thank you to the staff for the quick serving and attention to detail! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anybody and everybody and intend to visit often! Big thanks!

Recently held a Birthday Function at Lal Qila, I must say this is the perfect venue for hosting any of your work/personal functions. The Assistant Manager and Chef were patient, flexible and negotiable to cater for your party needs, reasonable with their pricing. Planning it out ahead with them was simple and easy, made the night run so much smoother and hassle free.
On the day, everything went out as planned. The room was beautifully decored as required with softly lit candles giving an intimate/romantic feel. They had all the plates, glasses, champagne glasses laid out beautifully and neatly in a practical arrangement when I arrived early. A separate table for the Champagne and the Champagne glasses, for the cake serving and a separate table for the cake to be cut.
Service at times on the day was a little bit slow but understandable as there were plenty of guests/other customers to cater for but was as well done as possible given the time frame and the number of guests and other customers on the day. The waiters/waitress were mostly spot on with their service.
Food was served fresh for my 31 guests. The soft drinks should of been a little well thought out, instead of putting two jugs of sprite on one table of 10/not unevenly distributed over the three tables, would be my only minor criticism.
Food was absolutely delicious, prior negotiated menu of Non Veg: Butter Chicken, Beef Madras, Vege Jalfreezi, Vege: Chef's Special... all well prepared, delicious and satisfying. My guests agree.
Dessert was yummy, their Mango Kulfi was a fav on the night and my personal fav, the Gulab Jamun was a little too sugary for my liking but served hot and fresh like it would be if I made it fresh at home.
My byo Birthday cake was beautifully brought in on a cake stand and decorated with the candles I provided, the restaurant had provided everything else I needed to cut and serve the cake hassle free.
Value for money, absolutely! Was worth $30 per person and with functions with many guests, the restaurant was kindly accommodating with the Soft Drinks to give a certain limit of jugs of Soft Drink free, discounted corkage for the Champagne I brought in, as negotiated.
Thank you Lal Qila, especially Rocky and the lovely Chef, you made my Birthday special and unforgettable.
