We're now locals, so tried this place out with some takeaway. We tried the curry puffs, pad thai with prawns, beef stir fry, and massaman and panang curries.
It was all distinctly average, with the stir fry smelling and tasting of dirty dishwater. The panang had a reasonable flavour, the curry puffs ok, but the rest was very average. Massaman was watery, panang had no vegs at all, and the pad thai was a mass of tangled noodles with little flavour. Given the number of decent Thai places nearby, we won't hurry back.
We ordered 4 dishes from Ladda last night and all except one were delicious. Which dish was the exception? It was the Gae Pad Prig Khing (#37), ie. lamb with chilli and fresh beans which was so unbelievably hot that we could barely start on the dish!! I think the menu needs to come with a warning regarding the chilli content of this dish!
This place would be great for the chilli-lover. I am also impressed that they have a website, http://www.laddas.com.au/ . Seems pretty sophisticated that you can read the menu online or order your meal online! 4 takeaway boxes for $45 was a bargain... it was enough for about 6 people!
I would recommending takeaway rather than eating in since the interior is not exactly suited to eating in.
I love this place!.. sure, maybe it's because it's only 2 mins walk from my house, but it's also unbelievably cheap (sometimes only $12 each!), and the food is so tasty and fresh!!.. If you're like us and decide on the train home that you couldn't be bothered to cook, pop into Ladda's with a long neck from the pub next door and enjoy the menagerie of passing street fare while you feast your senses!.. Love the special lamb curry, and the bbq lamb chops!.. They do a pretty good pad see ew too!
Great for take away. Sometimes I love to eat in too, experience the flouro lighting and the basic decor, but it is really honest and friendly. Love the food display in the window, lets you see just how fresh everything is. It's been here for many years so that says a lot too.
I order takeaways from here on occasion, the food is exquisite but here isn't much room to eat. They appear friendly and efficient, and the value for money is hard to beat. They also serve some Thai dishes that are not readily available at other restaurants.
This is the only Thai takeout we will order. The food is always cooked to perfection and extremely tasty. Definitely recommend the chicken satay and the beef with mushrooms The serving portions are very large and well priced compared to other Thai places in Newtown. Home delivery is prompt and food is always warm. The only criticism would be that the phone is always manned by people with very poor English making it very difficult to communicate what you want to order especially if you have special food needs.
The best thing is only handwritten on the lunch board; Mince Beef Noodles. Unbelievably good. Food always fresh and perfect. You can't walk by the joint without wanting some, with all the fresh ingredients all washed and chopped and arrayed in the window. Much cleaner, neater, and nicer than most places in Newtown. We love it.
